sofiaviolet: fancy goldfish (fishie!)
History prof is totally my favorite today! Our last class is on a Monday (the very last day of classes for the semester, actually), and our paper isn't due until the Friday after class ends. o_O

I am actually leaving Boston that Friday, and going to Maryland for a long weekend. JetBlue was running a 25% sale, and even before that discount, tickets were much cheaper than they had been for Thanksgiving holiday travel. I'll be with Cory and his family from Friday the 14th to Tuesday the 18th... giving me time to recuperate from the hell semester and finish that seminar paper before I leave, and to clean my damn apartment before my parents get here for Christmas.

I meant to have a batch of holiday cards in the mail today but I kinda failed on that. Soon, though! In the meantime, still plenty of time to ask me to send you one.

Now to answer comments and get groceries. Not necessarily in that order, or both this evening.

Not dead.

sofiaviolet: lol internets (<3 internets)
I just got eaten alive by Avengers fandom after the first time I saw the movie (and seeing it twice more hasn't helped). I have been spending all my free time reading fic on the AO3, or on tumblr because it takes zero brain cells to operate.

Therefore, I haven't checked my dreamroll in a month. If I missed anything important, please point it out to me? :]

I've been on vacation for the past week, first in Maryland with my boyfriend and his family, now in Virginia with my cousins, and starting tomorrow, back in Maryland for [community profile] con_txt. (Speaking of Con.txt, does anyone have space in their hotel room for me to crash?? *so not on top of things right now*) Resolved: hotel room and roommate acquired.
sofiaviolet: road signs in Boston: Storrow Dr., Callahan Tunnel, surface artery, detour (Boston)
I had a wonderful time in New Orleans. The post-Katrina buses are quite nice (although they're apparently the "push rear doors to open" type and not the "driver opens rear doors" type I'm used to) and I got to see the really really old work car near Lee Circle on the St. Charles line. The conference was excellent. And I am now the proud owner of this tank top and some water meter coasters.

Since my return, I've been busy with work, my internship, and my D&D and Shadowrun groups. (No class until Monday because spring break.)

I also got a new phone. It has internet! Mostly this is so I can check whether it's faster to walk from Simmons to Ruggles or if there'll be a bus along soonish, and so I stop having to call my parents and say, "I'm lost, please read me turn-by-turn directions over the phone." It's already demonstrating how very convenient it shall be.
sofiaviolet: some violets (violets)
It's cool, though. I did manage to dig the suitcase out and I have a list of everything I should need.

Note to throat: you're on notice. This better just be post-nasal drip irritation.
sofiaviolet: girl in purple dress carrying suitcase and walking down railroad tracks (travel)
Anybody want to advise me on how much clothes I should bring to New Orleans? I'll be there for three weeks but I'll be staying with my parents and my mother does laundry pretty much continuously. (I could probably get away with two pairs of pants and four shirts, but I'd get bored.)

things I need to do before I leave:
  • PACK!

  • clean out the pantry

  • clean off the countertops as much as possible

  • clean the stove

  • check in for my flight

  • take out the trash and recycling

  • load and run the dishwasher

  • EDIT: Okay, I have figured out the lower half of my body, mostly. Very flouncy trumpet-shaped skirt in aubergine or tiered olive green skirt?

    etc

  • Anybody know a good way to get soot and wax off novena candle enclosures after the candle is burned away? I'd like to reuse them (especially the printed ones) but want to clean them up first.

  • Related, a Helpful Hint, if you are the sort of person to do odd things involving candles at weird hours: don't burn loose incense on charcoal several hours before going though airport security. Especially not when you don't quite know what you're doing yet, and run out of both incense and desire for things to be burning, well before the charcoal ceases to burn.

  • You know that stupid black Western-style shirt Gerard wore in the really early days? I think I found one like it on Etsy. Someone prevent me from buying it, since I lack the skills to cut it down to actually fit me?

  • Also, things you should not leave until 3am before your flight:
  • backing up your computer (I have a Mac, I use Time Machine, but I do not live plugged into my external hard drive)
  • copying all 12gb of downloaded vids to your computer from the other external drive
  • re-lacing your 14-eye Doc Martens (yes, I fly in these shoes in order to avoid packing them. No, they are not the least airport-friendly shoes I've gone through security with. That prize goes to my other boots, which have wooden platforms and soles like tire treads, which were the only thing I could feasibly remove from my over-weight suitcase.)

  • Will be leaving shortly, but you'll hardly know I'm gone; I do my internets while Cory plays video games, and he plays a lot of video games. Toodles!

    10. In Hyoun's words, because I was over at the Customer Service desk asking what the next steps were:
When I asked the desk agent what his name was and whether I could confirm that he had no information about holding the flight open for us and 4 other customers headed to Knoxville, he refused to identify himself and said "you don't need to know that". He then proceeded to shove me backwards and yelled "Fuck you" at me. (Check the camera pointed at Gate A6 at Dulles around 10 PM on 1/7 to watch this exchange.)

  • [personal profile] cleverthylacine: My thoughts on Sarah Palin's responsibility for the Giffords shooting.
I am not a politician. It is not actually MY JOB to get people to do things for me. If I know better than to ask for things on the internet that I don't actually want, if I know that I'm responsible for what happens when I ask for things on the internet, I don't think I am wrong to look at someone like Sarah Palin, who can get thousands of dollars from people she will never meet and was a vice-presidential candidate, and say, "Yes, you too are responsible for what happens when you ask for stuff on the internet."
  • [personal profile] tim: But I Really Didn't Mean It
Get it? When you say, "You shouldn't be angry with me about that, because I didn't mean any harm," you are demanding that someone else do your emotional labor because you're too privileged to have to do so. And that is generally worse than the original thing you said, because while the original thing may have been unthinking, the response is a not-so-thinly veiled attempt to leverage one's superior political position. That, my friends, is busted. And is it what you really intend to say?

Last night we watched the first ep of Hourou Musuko, & people, it is wonderful. It's about trans kids in junior high, & I have been reliably informed that the manga isn't faily at all (isn't it nice to be able to watch things w/o holding your breath waiting for it?).
  • sofiaviolet: photo of a bird (birds for brains)
Irrational terror has proved to be irrational! In other words: no, his parents didn't hate me. They actually seemed to like me. :)

We spent most of our time lounging around the house, interrupted by a day trip to Washington, a couple of restaurant meals, and a visit from Cory's brother and future sister-in-law.

Overall, it wasn't all that restful a time, since I had to be 'on' for a pretty large portion of every day. Plus the headache I had for the first two days I was there, and the ongoing problem of being allergic to the dog (and also probably the carpets; this is why I love hardwood floors). But Cory and I are pretty good at the whole "companionably ignore each other" thing, where we do separate things in the same room, and [the rest of this is filtered].

... was on Saturday. Posting this on Tuesday. I have done worse.

Ellie and I left the house late and picked up [livejournal.com profile] shadesong late as a result, but traffic was very light and we still made it to Wyrding Studios a bit early.

The morning activity was spinning, first from combed top and then from a batt. I seem to spin faster from combed top (easier to manage the fiber) but more consistently from batts (I find drafting easier). Although, as you can probably tell, I'm not very good at it yet. But between how satisfying it was and how many of Kythryne's art batts I've purchased already, I will continue spinning and, I hope, improving.

After lunch, we went up to the studio and picked out things for either a pendant or a pair of earrings. I made these earrings. We also got to pick out things for a take-home project, although I wound up with some spare time and made this before and after the fused glass portion of the day.

Fused glass! No photos of that yet. But now I have learned how to cut glass, and that dichroic glass looks different before and after it's fused. I did wind up with a small scrap of silver dichroic glass that had gone through the kiln all by its lonesome, so I made this pendant for fun.

The last portion of the day was a demonstration of making jewelry from found objects. I brought a set of dice, a silk flower that fell off Cameryn's set for Phone Whore, a shower curtain clip, and some blobs of solder. The blobs turned out to be too fragile for wire-wrapping, but Kythryne got everything else in there. And the d20 pops out the back of the pendant.

Here's all the photos from the art retreat. And there is another one in October, for those of you who can make it to Concord, NH.

Going to New Orleans, whee!! I leave Sunday morning and get back to Boston on June 16th.

(And then I leave for [community profile] con_txt on the 17th.)

Am I packed? Oh, no, of course not. And I have to work all day tomorrow, will probably go in on Friday to finish things up, and will be out of the house Friday and Saturday nights. I am probably going straight from Cameryn's party to the airport, to be honest, because who the fuck needs sleep. /o\

(Plus, I don't want to get too behind on my dreamroll or tumblr or link roundups, and I have two draft posts I need to get done. And I'm working on a mix I want to post sometime soon.)

Today's Groupon for Boston applies to classes at Bead + Fiber in the South End. Since there's totally stuff I haven't been able to figure out on my own at all.

As Ellie and I are leaving for Northampton in less than an hour (we hope), I will catch up on the interwebs later. I may or may not spend the day spamming the crap out of Twitter, and there may or may not be pictures when I get home.

    Best of 2009

December 1st: best trip of 2009

Well, if I had needed to travel for it, this would have been [livejournal.com profile] muskratjamboree, because it was a good time and it gave me a [personal profile] solarcat.

But since MJ is in Boston and I didn't stay in the hotel or anything...

Unlike in years past (okay, mainly the year Ellie and I were living in that shitty apartment in East Boston), I didn't do that much traveling this year. No running down to New York or further abroad for concerts, which I did a lot of in 2008.

I did spend two weeks in New Orleans with my parents, which was awesome but not particularly interesting to the internet at large - I chilled, ate a lot of good food, and slept soundly every night on my very squishy mattress.

But what I'm actually going to use as my Answer For The Meme is TIC. Not the travel - I had a headache on the way to Vermont, and we got a late start. But the conference was good. I was social and willingly offline for all of Saturday and the travel time on either side. And as much as I joke about smacking down n00bs in my classes, I kept my own damn mouth shut for the conference, because I was there to learn and support my sister and her friends and the other attendees.

But really, 2009 was about burrowing in and making Jamaica Plain my home. Through Ellie, I've connected with local performing arts stuff: Big Moves, Boston's burlesque scene, queer performance art. We've tried a few new restaurants in the neighborhood, like an Indian place on Centre Street and the fried chicken joint a couple of blocks away.

My goal is to get fully unpacked before 2010. (I never managed to get 100% unpacked at our old place, and I still have several boxes in my room. The implied impermanence is probably badly for my soul or something.)

    In my recent past:

Thursday, Ellie and I went shoe shopping. She didn't find anything and I really don't need any more shoes, so we just headed home again. I called [personal profile] solarcat from the train and she met me at Forest Hills, and we drove back to her apartment to watch Life on the Murder Scene. (You guys. Their faces, okay, their fucking faces. I do not know what it would take to pry me from this fandom.)

By the time I got home, it was midnight, and I still had to pack for my trip.
