I think it's because I've spent so much of my social-time in fandom - reading fic and meta, connecting with people - but I tend to apply a certain degree of... IDK, remixitude? to my writing even though I cannot do fanfic. Deliberate trope-poking (perhaps especially tropes from fandom), and also a certain degree of character-napping from RPF fandoms (because less copyright shenanigans than adapting other people's fictional characters). I especially like certain fannish forms - five things stories, for example.
