interesting things from the past few days )

streamlining my closet

I have decided that my wardrobe must be decimated.

In the original sense of the word, that is. One of every ten things must go. This has many advantages:

* I get to say "decimate" a lot.
* It's a large enough goal to accomplish something (like getting my t-shirts back into a drawer)...
* ... but small enough that I will be able to work quickly.
* Because I am not agonizing over tough choices, I won't be tempted to ignore my quota.
* Since I'm dealing with batches of ten [skirts/tops/underpants/etc], I don't have to pull EVERYTHING out of the closet all at once.

A good time was had with the family; I'm sorry I didn't make it outside that bubble to hang out with friends.

Made it out of The Bead Shop for under $100 for the first time since discovering it. Mom was shocked. We also managed to get [personal profile] elliesaur some new clothes, which is actually a pretty major accomplishment. (Also, flannel shirts: why so hard to find?)

Celebration in the Oaks was nice, even if they do need to improve their event management. (The usual parking lot was closed, the new parking lot was a zoo, and the line was less organized and self-aware than any concert line I've stood in.) After stopping for dinner and spending forever looking for parking, we actually walked away the first night - we looked at the length of the line we were standing in and decided there was no way we would get inside City Park and get to do anything before they shut down for the night. We tried again the next night with pre-purchased tickets and showing up before they even opened, which worked perfectly. One train ride, one roller coaster ride, a walk through the botanical gardens, and then we got dinner.

The weather was great. I can't believe I used to complain about how cold I was during the winter. (Although I guess New Orleans was the coldest weather I'd ever known...)

Day of Epic Personal Responsibility! Got shit done at work. More importantly, wrote emails I'd been putting off to history advisor and my closest contact in the honors department. Haven't sent them yet; I am going to read over them one more time after dinner.

Tomorrow's Epic Personal Responsibility! Print off paperwork and spend part of lunch break chasing down people in order to declare my minor in women's studies. Because I took all the courses, dammit. (This may be a multi-day project...)

Other things I need to do: senior clearance, apply to graduate, register for classes (while I'm in North Dakota, hence the urgency of the emails: if something goes wrong, I don't want to be trying to fix it over email with no advance warning to whoever has to deal with it/me).

Senior pictures are next week, apparently. I feel kind of meh about it, but then I am pretty meh about most things like that. I mean, I tried to skip my high school graduation (and while I don't have any strong feelings now that it's over, I still think it was a waste of an afternoon). It's kind of telling that the main thing encouraging me to bother with it is the fact that my hair will be super-purple (since this weekend is my last chance to do that before I need to have very bright hair for Halloween). I might even be willing to order prints, for the sheer awesome of being able to give them to my stodgier relatives.

I've had a headache for most of the weekend, spent waaaaaaay too long trying to sleep the headache off, and then it took Ellie and I all afternoon to get groceries (we hit Allandale Farms, Whole Foods, BJ's, and Stop-n-Shop. Plus Home Depot so she could price some set-building stuff).
    • All in a Name: New Software Benefits Transgender Students
The new software, created as an adjunct to the Banner student information system, allows students to fill out a form specifying their preferred name and pronoun. The information appears on all paperwork seen by faculty, so petitioning professors individually, a process that gave students no choice but to out themselves, is a thing of the past.
    • via [personal profile] naraht: The Dunbar Number as a Limit to Group Sizes
My anecdotal evidence generally seems to support the idea that group sizes will usually plateau at a number lower than 150 participants. This comes from 20 years of doing facilitation both on and offline, running several software companies, and running various forums at America Online. In particular, many online communities provide good evidence for Dunbar's Number actually being an upper limit (either due to reduced efficiency or due to increased dispersion).

I'd like to put together a showcase of DW users' creativity -- it's really easy for us to show off writers (of both fiction and nonfiction) on DW, since the tools we have for sharing and promoting writing are fairly well developed, but [staff profile] mark and I always wanted DW to be a place to showcase all kinds of creativity, from writing to craft to photography to just plain chronicling your life, and I'd really like to start doing some work to promote the non-written forms of creative work our users get up to.

... was on Saturday. Posting this on Tuesday. I have done worse.

Ellie and I left the house late and picked up [livejournal.com profile] shadesong late as a result, but traffic was very light and we still made it to Wyrding Studios a bit early.

The morning activity was spinning, first from combed top and then from a batt. I seem to spin faster from combed top (easier to manage the fiber) but more consistently from batts (I find drafting easier). Although, as you can probably tell, I'm not very good at it yet. But between how satisfying it was and how many of Kythryne's art batts I've purchased already, I will continue spinning and, I hope, improving.

After lunch, we went up to the studio and picked out things for either a pendant or a pair of earrings. I made these earrings. We also got to pick out things for a take-home project, although I wound up with some spare time and made this before and after the fused glass portion of the day.

Fused glass! No photos of that yet. But now I have learned how to cut glass, and that dichroic glass looks different before and after it's fused. I did wind up with a small scrap of silver dichroic glass that had gone through the kiln all by its lonesome, so I made this pendant for fun.

The last portion of the day was a demonstration of making jewelry from found objects. I brought a set of dice, a silk flower that fell off Cameryn's set for Phone Whore, a shower curtain clip, and some blobs of solder. The blobs turned out to be too fragile for wire-wrapping, but Kythryne got everything else in there. And the d20 pops out the back of the pendant.

Here's all the photos from the art retreat. And there is another one in October, for those of you who can make it to Concord, NH.

    Notes

Yeah, I know. But getting used to the full-time job has been really rough this time around. IDK.

The BARCC Blogathon auctions are running through 2010-08-03, 17:00 Eastern.

    Recently

Work was fun today. In that special way where my eyes aren't used to contacts yet and I spent the whole day using a computer, and also in the way where one of the door alarms was going off pretty much all day because it was broken.

I was supposed to go to a concert tonight, but I just could not manage it. :( I napped instead. After I write this post, I'm going to go back to bed.

Signs I am tired: I am trying to read my dreamroll using ?ship=300. /o\

    Retail Therapy

I ordered some stuff from Fire Mountain Gems over the weekend, and it shipped today. \o/ So that'll be here next Monday, approximately. Unfortunately, I can't bring my travel jewelry kit to Grand Forks. I don't think the TSA would approve of my pliers. :( :( :( Plus I am only bringing a carry-on. DNW to pay stupid fee for checked bag.

sofiaviolet: a painting which reminds me of myself (museum piece)
[livejournal.com profile] shadesong, as you may know, is Blogathonning for the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center. She is also running a charity auction, and is writing for each of the pieces from the auction. These were mine:

    We Met in February
The Awful Feeling of Knowing You Don't Remember No
    Chains and Crippling Shoes

Bid on the auctions or sponsor 'song directly.

sofiaviolet: a pair of sexy red heels on a hardwood floor (red shoes)
OH GOD FINALLY I AM CAUGHT UP. I only had to go to skip=620 to do it.

Apologies for my epic failure at updating; I don't like to post when I'm behind on my reading. And speaking of my dreamroll... I am having to cut down on my subscriptions because I am overwhelmed. Bleh full-time job. I love my work, but I also love my internets. It is a sad time for me.

    Important things:

    • Every year, [livejournal.com profile] shadesong does Blogathon for the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center. Her fundraising includes a charity auction; I have three pieces in the mix this year: Chains and Crippling Shoes, We Met in February, and The Awful Feeling of Knowing You Don't Remember No. Plus lots of other really lovely things that you should go and bid on!
    • I am going to Grand Forks! I'll be staying with C. and will also take the opportunity to hang out with Ellen and Greg, since I missed them in New Orleans this year. I am not sure what that will do to my internet time: on the one hand, C. and I will probably be very occupied with each other, but on the other hand, I can easily see us just chilling together with our laptops for a little while every day. At any rate, I will be out of Boston from August 14th to August 21st.
    • Speaking of C., we are now officially in a relationship! We put it on Facebook and everything. Current relationship status is "open" although there's an unspoken expectation that we'll be functionally monogamous at least until we can talk about it in person. There will be a more *ahem* detailed update later - hooray for filters.

    sofiaviolet: *sigh* (sigh)
    • I am behind. I am really behind on my dreamroll, and my link-posting, and also my sleep. I know this and I definitely plan to catch up, although that might not happen until the weekend, because...
    • I have an internet date with C. tonight. Since we can't actually hang out in person, we are going to hang out using the magic of the interwebs and watch Dr. Horrible.
    • Trying to figure out when I can visit him; definitely not the week of SAA, since both my higher-ups here in the archives will be doing the professional conference thing. Maybe soon after that?
    • I also have to find time tomorrow or Saturday to get myself to Watertown and drop off my Blogathon auction pieces with [livejournal.com profile] shadesong. But first I have to take pictures and finish writing up the descriptions.
    • And on Saturday, I'm seeing one of the Shaken Up Shakespeare plays that have been so wildly popular. With [personal profile] stultiloquentia, who I missed at Con.txt, and also [personal profile] kyriacarlisle, I believe. And at least one other person whom I have not yet connected to a journal.
    • I have been reworking my tags and dealing with imported content. My goals are to make my old entries accessible to either the general public or my access list (except for the ones that make me cringe, which can damn well stay private), and to make my tags make sense. (I would be focused on forcing the "evil ex boyfriend" tag out of the tags module in my layout, but as most if not all of those entries are private, no one but me can see it.)
    • Art Retreat at Wyrding Studios. !!!!!! Yes plz. Ellie will drive me up because then she's already in New Hampshire and can go to their lumber yards.

I promise I will update with actual things from my life! Some time later today (as it is now technically Monday).

But for now, the links: 10 links )

    :(

sofiaviolet: candy hearts from a prescription bottle (and the blue ones help me fall)

Well, internets, I am definitely experiencing a depressive episode that exceeds my medication's ability to compensate. :(

There are definitely some external components. Not sure if that makes me feel better or worse than Completely Random Brain Fuckery. I am probably experiencing a very extended sort of con drop, because I had 3+ weeks of New Orleans and parents and Doing All Of The Things (research, eating, shopping), 24 hours in Boston in which I had to Do All Of The Other Things (unpack, repack, work most of a day), then the con, and then more parents (they came up to Boston for a week to visit Ellie, so I got a few extra days with them post-con). Nothing to do but go to work, and I'm still part-time until the 5th.

It is also approaching five years since I was raped. (formulated to be hypo-trigger-genic) )

I am dwelling on it because I promised to make an item for [livejournal.com profile] shadesong's Blogathon auction (I made three things last year). She always blogs for BARCC, but the theme for this year's items is the strength/resilience of survivors. I have no idea what I'm going to make, and the openness of the theme doesn't actually help (last year, I used [livejournal.com profile] shadesong's fiction for prompts).

I probably should have made the Blogathon piece while I was in New Orleans. (there are some details here, maybe triggers) )

So my plan for the rest of the afternoon had been to catch up on my dreamroll, which I have not checked since Friday because spoons, but I think what I will actually do after I post this is play with my boxes of beads and whatnot. See what comes up.

    still not dead

sofiaviolet: fleur de lis abstract celestial background (fleur de lis)
I haven't been updating because I've been too busy and I haven't been keeping up with my reading page because I've been too tired. (I will catch up on everything, I promise!)

New Orleans is treating me well. We've hit so many restaurants and other types of eateries (Camellia Grill, Five Happiness, Squeal, Taqueria Corona, Plum Street Snoball...), and for some reason I'm hungry most of the time. IDK.

Mom and I hit Magazine Street on Friday. We spent kind of a lot of time in The Bead Shop and I am going to try to get her to bring me back next weekend.

And once I post this, French Quarter!
sofiaviolet: crafty-style letters spell out "make something" (make something)
In my enthusiasm for this whole enterprise, I'll be continuing the daily link roundups. I never thought I'd be that kind of blogger, but I seem to have developed the habit, even before I was doing a specific kind of link-gathering. But while link-collecting is a useful service, I also want to be making other posts, especially in the context of [community profile] three_weeks_for_dw.

One thing I'd like to do is provide a new song every day!

Daily Song (right-click): Hole - Celebrity Skin
Within the first week this song was on my ipod, it went straight to the top of the most-played list. It remains in the number one spot, with almost three times as many plays as the next song down.

[personal profile] blnchflr has asked me to write about unreliable narrators, although this will take a few days. (I shake my fist at the end of the semester.) I am still accepting prompts, questions, et cetera, via comment/pm/email/carrier pigeon.

    * All $winterholiday cards have been mailed! As well as the international packages. Domestic packages will go out Saturday, after I finish making their contents.

    * Items have been made for [personal profile] harborshore and [personal profile] fleurdeliser's jewelry prompts (and you can still leave me a prompt if you want), but I didn't take pictures last night, because dinnertime. So, uh. *waves*

I had been waiting to post about this until I got some more items uploaded, but. I keep mentioning it to people, and there's thirteen things in there, which is just going to have to be enough for now. (I had so much more time when I had no social life, srsly you guys.)

Etsy shop. I has one. Jewelry and very tiny paintings - future plans include a wider selection of jewelry, larger paintings, and possibly other things. ;)

And some interactive funtimes: jewelry prompts! (I'll take painting prompts some time soon, promise.) Your prompt can be anything, but I reserve the right to engage in some wacky free-association to turn it into a piece of jewelry.

The prompter has right of first refusal on their piece. After that, I'll offer these pieces to my journal readership, and after that, whatever's left will go on etsy.

Even if you doubt you'll buy whatever comes of your prompt, you can still ask me to make something. No excuses or apologies needed. Nobody has to buy what I make from their prompt. I just want inspiration.

As soon as I post this, I will wander into the dining room and get started on their stuff. I will also take requests from up to three more people.
