sofiaviolet: Voodoo is a very interesting religion for the whole family. Even those members of it who are dead. (voodoo)
  • Anybody know a good way to get soot and wax off novena candle enclosures after the candle is burned away? I'd like to reuse them (especially the printed ones) but want to clean them up first.

  • Related, a Helpful Hint, if you are the sort of person to do odd things involving candles at weird hours: don't burn loose incense on charcoal several hours before going though airport security. Especially not when you don't quite know what you're doing yet, and run out of both incense and desire for things to be burning, well before the charcoal ceases to burn.

  • You know that stupid black Western-style shirt Gerard wore in the really early days? I think I found one like it on Etsy. Someone prevent me from buying it, since I lack the skills to cut it down to actually fit me?

  • Also, things you should not leave until 3am before your flight:
  • backing up your computer (I have a Mac, I use Time Machine, but I do not live plugged into my external hard drive)
  • copying all 12gb of downloaded vids to your computer from the other external drive
  • re-lacing your 14-eye Doc Martens (yes, I fly in these shoes in order to avoid packing them. No, they are not the least airport-friendly shoes I've gone through security with. That prize goes to my other boots, which have wooden platforms and soles like tire treads, which were the only thing I could feasibly remove from my over-weight suitcase.)

  • Will be leaving shortly, but you'll hardly know I'm gone; I do my internets while Cory plays video games, and he plays a lot of video games. Toodles!

  • The Pervocracy: No and no and no and yes.
I do this for regular sex, too. If I can say that no, we're not raw-dogging it; no, you're not sneaking it up my ass; no, you really have to stop when I say stop; then I can say "yes" to the sex itself. Limits may feel all limity, but within those limits, some fucking hot sex can happen. Without limits, you're not allowed in my house, much less my vagina.
  • IKEA Hackers: Makeup vanity for small spaces
My bedroom isn't very large so I needed a small makeup vanity. I'm the type that likes to see all my makeup because if I don't see it, I won't use it.

The Prophet, peace and blessing upon him, said:

"Help your brother, whether he be an oppressor or one of the oppressed."

Some said "O Messenger of God, we help him if he is oppressed; but how can we help him if he is an oppressor?"

The Prophet said, "By stopping him."
  • [personal profile] sassbandit: Bandom-related articles about audio engineering and production
So I was digging around in the archives of Mix Magazine which is a trade magazine for audio engineers, and thought some of the following articles might be of interest to bandom folks:
  • [personal profile] melannen: AWESOME!!!
...So the other day I did that Dinosaur Comics fanart where they have feathers?

And Ryan North, creator of Dinosaur Comics, found out about it somehow, and he went back in the archives and has posted an alternate, scientifically accurate version of the comic starting at the beginning.
  • [personal profile] azurelunatic: WICKED PRETTY THINGS: My $0.37
Editing my stories as I did was an act of self-erasure: sometimes necessary to survive, but not okay, never okay, merely the lesser of two evils. Pretending that the world only contains straight people is not okay. Teaching your children that the world only contains straight people is not okay. It is a denial of that-which-is, a denial of c'thia. Treating any mention of same-sex romance as inherently more sexually explicit than an equivalent action of an opposite-sex couple is not okay. Trying to pretend that the only possible ethical instance of human sexual behavior is for reproduction is not okay. Teaching your children that is not okay either.
  • sofiaviolet: Lyn-Z of Mindless Self Indulgence (lyn-z)
Music seminar went to the MFA yesterday; they have a lovely instrument collection. By special arrangement, we were able to hear several pieces by Couperin, Bach, and Mozart played on keyboard instruments: a very complicated harpsichord with two keyboards and three sets of strings, a clavichord, and a piano from 1796. So cool omg.

So there was that thing where the Danger Days special editions were flawed and therefore delayed, so MCR gave people who'd ordered them coupon codes for $15? I used mine to buy two sets of Zone Badges. One of those sets is mine, all mine! But as for the others... uh, who wants one? :D

Since I am talking about sending people things, I should probably mention $winterholiday cards again. Locked post with screened comments.

Over the next few months, he just would not stop talking about more Hello Kitty crap we could get for my office. Archivists, I know projection when I see it. And so some of us came in over the weekend to give Rob the workspace of his dreams.

Aw, you guys! MCR is playing in Boston as a graduation present for me!! Their show is the night before commencement (which I have decided not to bother with).

I want to go to as many of their shows as possible. Definitely New York (which is on Mom's birthday and makes me so fucking sad they're not going to New Orleans), maybe Philadelphia (can do by bus but would rather have a ride); other possible shows that require I make buddies with a car-owner include Montreal, Sayreville, and D.C. Who out there will be driving to shows, preferably departing from Boston, and has room in their car for one tiny person who will chip in for gas, food, and lodgings?

I am sad that the Minneapolis show isn't a few days later; with no classes Tuesday and Friday plus Monday the 18th off, I could make it out there and introduce Cory to that side of myself. I am even sadder that Mom doesn't get a show. She might combine the Atlanta show with a visit to Fiona, Dan, and Maddie, but it's in the middle of a school week, and she's not going to drive to Texas.

sofiaviolet: roses are #ff0000 [red] (roses are #ff0000)

    Recently

Work, mostly. [personal profile] solarcat and I are going to Garment District and maybe some other places this weekend, for Killjoys costuming purposes. (I also need to figure out a Ramona Flowers costume, since Cory has decided that's what we're doing for Halloween, since I'll be in Grand Forks and all.)

Ellie and I spent some time last night talking about our plans for revamping the apartment. The main thrust is to make our space better for our creative pursuits. So much of it depends on her having the time and spoons to build new furniture, so no idea when any of it will get done. I can post an outline of our plans, with crappy diagrams, if anyone is interested.

(Tangent: I once got to attend one of Jerry's workshops. He and my dad go pretty far back; we would usually pay him a visit when we took our road trips to New Mexico. Jerry knew I was working on a novel, he was running a writing workshop and it was going to be pretty fiction-oriented, and he hadn't seen Dad in a while. So Dad and I took a week off work/school and went. It was awesome.)

(And another tangent: Wow has my life been full of fantastic opportunities and experiences that resulted directly from grown-ups taking a chance on me. Including my current job.)

    Plans

I am considering StrowlerCon, but would need roommates. I also need to run it past Ellie and see if she wants in.

    • Social/Justice
Solomon's threat is the threat of fairness; Solomon's justice is that he restores right human relationships. Justice is not measured by a pattern -- of uniformity or otherwise -- *or* by a fair process which must logically produce fair results. Justice occurs only when it supports just human relationships. It doesn't matter how fair the process, if a beggar starves while a rich man feasts *this is not justice*, because justice is about having the right human relationships. "Social justice", in my thinking, is a concept of justice that is still focussed, as of old, not on who has the "stuff", but on the relationships between people that the "stuff" (money, property) is tracking. We need a modifier because "justice" unadorned now refers to the process of law, e.g. in "Department of Justice".

Post office seems to be holding everything Ellie and I receive from outside the United States. "Pissed off" is putting it lightly, especially since I pretty much have to leave work early to make it to our local post office before it closes.

Work has been kind of meh this week. And Cory hasn't been online much for the past few days. And Ellie is too spoonless to cook. And the temperature dropped kind of suddenly. Many things contributing to my overall bleh right now. I am looking forward to the weekend.

ETA: Cory is back online. Much cheered by this. :)

As for MCR: thanks for finally giving us some real news, fuckers. And the album does sound like something I'd like. But I will forever be sad that we won't get Black Dragon Fighting Society.

There was this fic, and I cannot remember who wrote it or what it was called.

It's Frank/Gerard. Gerard is working in the city, and there's a cute guy he sees every morning on his commute (pretty sure it's a train, not a ferry). One of the guys winds up answering a craigslist ad from the other one, and they strike up this email friendship. Gerard eventually realizes that his train buddy and email guy are the same person, and he freaks out. Frank has been doing an internship and his final project or whatever is to put together a music showcase. He invites Gerard on the train and by email. Gerard dithers a lot but finally goes, and then there is the happy ending.

????? I really want to reread this one right now. Anyone have a link, title, or author name?

Here's the plan: every Friday, let's recommend some people and/or communities to follow on Dreamwidth. That's it. No complicated rules, no "pass this on to 7.328 friends or your cat will die". Just introduce us to some new things to read.

[community profile] white_collar and [community profile] leverage! I just started watching these shows very recently and I find both delightful.

[community profile] co_workers_suck is a new community for the obnoxious people you work with. Presuming you work with some, which I don't.

[community profile] kink_finders is another new community devoted to finding fic that hits a particular narrative or sexual kink.

[personal profile] solarcat is awesome, and one of my bffs! She writes bandom fic (MCR and Panic), plus one MCR/AI8 crossover. I am going to try to make her write the toppy!Frank fic we briefly discussed at the Flea. ♥__♥
