sofiaviolet: fancy goldfish (fishie!)
History prof is totally my favorite today! Our last class is on a Monday (the very last day of classes for the semester, actually), and our paper isn't due until the Friday after class ends. o_O

I am actually leaving Boston that Friday, and going to Maryland for a long weekend. JetBlue was running a 25% sale, and even before that discount, tickets were much cheaper than they had been for Thanksgiving holiday travel. I'll be with Cory and his family from Friday the 14th to Tuesday the 18th... giving me time to recuperate from the hell semester and finish that seminar paper before I leave, and to clean my damn apartment before my parents get here for Christmas.

I meant to have a batch of holiday cards in the mail today but I kinda failed on that. Soon, though! In the meantime, still plenty of time to ask me to send you one.

Now to answer comments and get groceries. Not necessarily in that order, or both this evening.

Holiday cards! Because this is a thing I do. If you would like a card, please leave a comment.

Comments are screened, so that they are a safe place to leave a mailing address. You can also PM me or email sofiaviolet@sofiaviolet.com if you prefer.

In addition to your mailing address, you can also include info on what holiday(s) you celebrate or very definitely don't celebrate (so I can send you a card that will be appreciated, not offensive).

Please also consider this a place to leave a link to your wishlist. :)

sofiaviolet: animated Hello Kitty-as-Cthulhu (lol tentacles)
Arkham Horror last night with Cid and Christian (Cid had invited a bunch of other people but we were the only two who actually made it). We battled - and defeated, for now - Shub-Niggurath. Also we ordered Chinese from Food Wall; I ate an entire large pepper steak and accompanying rice, and now I am sad because no leftovers. Note to self: you owe Christian $$ for dinner.

Ellie and I aren't doing Thanksgiving, really. We had leftover chicken noodle soup for lunch (homemade from an entire chicken, so we have lots of it), and she's reheating a roast right now. Our actual celebration is going to be on Saturday at Cameryn's house with a huge chunk of our local friends. Note to self: buy vanilla ice cream, pray it will fit in Cameryn's freezer until dessert.

I mailed the holiday cards yesterday - okay, I mailed the holiday cards to the internet yesterday. I still need to send cards to all the people who don't read my journal, like my relatives and my local friends and my boyfriend's roommates.

Now I will sit around with my hair under a plastic shower cap, feeling grateful for many many things, like purple hair dye and a sister who is intent on teaching me to ride a bike and the people who live inside my computer. ♥

sofiaviolet: a well-loved set of watercolors (paint)

Post office seems to be holding everything Ellie and I receive from outside the United States. "Pissed off" is putting it lightly, especially since I pretty much have to leave work early to make it to our local post office before it closes.

Work has been kind of meh this week. And Cory hasn't been online much for the past few days. And Ellie is too spoonless to cook. And the temperature dropped kind of suddenly. Many things contributing to my overall bleh right now. I am looking forward to the weekend.

ETA: Cory is back online. Much cheered by this. :)

As for MCR: thanks for finally giving us some real news, fuckers. And the album does sound like something I'd like. But I will forever be sad that we won't get Black Dragon Fighting Society.

sofiaviolet: black and white EGL dress from Mary Magdalene (egl)

I'll be out of town August 14-21. While I'll have internet access, I have no idea how much I'll be online. But rest assured I'll catch up even if I can't keep up.

Bosses and one reference desk person are away for the Society of American Archivists conference. Work is freakishly quiet.

Busy couple of days. Tuesday morning, I hauled a box of fun surprises to the post office (since the TSA probably frowns on taking rope in your carry-on), went to work, and then went to Diesel to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] shadesong and receive my BARCC auction winnings: a lovely flogger. After that, I ran into Andra and spent forever telling her about C. (she kept asking questions, and I am still flush with omgyay).

Yesterday I got some purple dye, and this morning before work, I put it in my hair to see what it would do. Not a lot, as it turns out: my hair is too dark. Now it's even darker, with something of a blue cast to it. While kinda disappointing, it's not actually surprising, and it's definitely not a bad result.

Leaving for Grand Forks at stupid o'clock Saturday morning. Clothes are basically picked out, and toiletries are selected and quart-size bagged.

Still open for questions.

I know so little about you, I'm afraid my question is quite pedestrian! What would your dream job be?

Pretty close to what I'm doing right now. I want to be an archivist full-time, as my real grownup job. But I'm not thrilled with the idea of meetings and managing other people, which my bosses at work have to do. I just want to work with the collections.

I want to write about "lazy femme," which is what I call my gender presentation. In short: I like things like skirts and makeup, but I don't generally bother with these more effortful bits of gendered plumage.

More packing, go to bed, sleep, get up, go to work, come home, eat dinner, finish packing, go to bed, get up, get on airplane, arrive in Grand Forks, get laid.

sofiaviolet: a parcel wrapped in brown paper (package)
Who wants an obnoxiously touristy postcard from New Orleans?

[Comments are screened.]
sofiaviolet: naked girl hugging her knees to her chest (nude)
Oh look! It's Ellie's phone!

(Context: my sister works for a company whose main thing is superbatteries of the future, or something. Charge faster, last longer, don't explode - that kind of thing. And she's in the market for a new phone since hers (which used to be mine, and is about 4 years old) no longer has any battery life to speak of. And it's a phone shaped much like the one in the photo.)

And now that I've killed the joke with explanation...

Mail! I received a card from [personal profile] harborshore on Thursday, a card and a wrapped gift-shaped object* from [personal profile] thelemic on Friday, cards from [personal profile] solarcat and [personal profile] insunshine on Saturday, and cards from [personal profile] turlough and [personal profile] chaosmanor yesterday. :D

* Which I haven't opened yet, because I'm not sure if I should wait. [personal profile] thelemic?

My weekend: naked people and nearly-naked people. )

sofiaviolet: xkcd: stick figure and text: ...well played. (well played)
One of my brother's friends gave him a wifi detecting t-shirt. It lights up. I'm not even kidding.

My mom dropped her phone in the sink, but Dad took it apart right away and dried it out and it's working again.

FedEx says our package from home was delivered to the back door today. Uh, no it wasn't. It's either at someone else's house (fail, delivery guy) or someone stole it. And will probably be disappointed unless they actually wanted a shitload of peanut butter crackers that have probably been recalled, and other similarly inexpensive stuff.

Today I have written 1100+ words in a document called idfic. Urgh. Why can't I be inspired to work on something that doesn't make me cringe in embarrassment??

I have a small, nagging headache and I spent over fifteen minutes alternately rebooting and thumping my laptop in order to get my wireless card working. I need to take it in, but I can't bear to be without it. It has to be 100% unusable or I won't give it up.

Italian was lovely. Binetti says we're not allowed to call him "professor" or we fail. That'll be a fun class, very low pressure. Gender and Society in Modern Europe in a little less than an hour.

My stomach really hurts. Dammit. On the other hand, I have a pretty Frankie icon. That makes me feel a little better.

It's weird to burn cds for your mom, y/n? Because I've acquired a lot of stuff I think she'd like since the last one I made for the car. I need to buy some blank cds, though. But they come in, like, 100 packs. I won't need anywhere near all of them, so I'll make people mix cds. Seriously.

Just comment or shoot an email to sofiaviolet @ (gmail.com, sofiaviolet.com, livejournal.com, they all work) and I'll make a mixtape cd for you. Because I'm awesome like that.

sofiaviolet: fleur de lis abstract celestial background (fleur de lis)
It's been two years since Katrina. WTF, it feels like a lot longer. (Although my sense of duration is broken, so that's not surprising.)

the 8 stages of joining bandom

I went all the way from stage 1 to stage 8 in, like, a month.

I've seen this on my flist at least three times:

I love to get postcards and I also love to send them, so the first five people who comment will get a postcard from me. On one condition though, if you comment you have to offer this in your own LJ. That way there'll be a whole load of postcards circling the world, and how cool is that?!

But I'm happy to send out more than five postcards, so just email your address to sofiaviolet@sofiaviolet.com and I'll get right on it.

If they hooked the ResMail package database up to myneu, so that students could check to see if they have packages WITH THE INTERNETS.
