I know I am never going to reach the people who are genuinely cruel and are just using concern as an excuse to exercise that cruelty. This is for the friends, family members, and loved ones who genuinely want to be kind, want to help us, want to find the right tactic to make us understand why we must lose weight and how to do so.

Wound up at the Lucy Parsons Center earlier today (because they're having a sale in advance of their move to Jamaica Plain*) and walked out with a copy of Streets of Hope: The Fall and Rise of an Urban Neighborhood, which is about the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative. Which is awesome because I'm about to start processing a collection that's pretty much all about the DSNI.

sofiaviolet: Livejournal - I'm just here for the free porn (interoperability ftw)
Ellie has found a new grocery store, which is good because it's closer and has better produce, but bad because it's not near anything else (that we know of). (Seriously, we switch grocery stores basically every year. At our old place, we went to the one in walking distance. The first year we lived in JP, we needed a T-accessible supermarket. After Ellie got a car, we started going to South Bay because there were other stores (like Home Depot) nearby. Then we switched allegiance to Dedham - Home Depot along the way, BJ's down the road.)

  • [personal profile] forthwritten: fanfiction and my younger self
And so, when we were about 16 or 17, one of my friends discovered fanfiction in general and slash fiction in particular. In a way, we used it as a silent, secret rebellion, swapping these stories underground (no, really; our common room was in a basement). It fascinated me. Here were stories about people who presented as female one day and male the next, who loved people of their gender, who negotiated sex, who didn't have happily-ever-afters but who had to talk and argue and reconfigure their friendship. The screen did not coyly fade to black and the story often did not end with sex; instead, there were morning-afters and misunderstandings and confusion that had to be resolved. The people had agency and were active participants and, as [personal profile] the_shoshanna notes, sex did not fundamentally change them.

We are therefore temporarily pausing the existing import jobs until the traffic clears up some and we are able to further modify the importer so that it is even less of a load on LJ. We are also temporarily stopping the ability to queue new imports, so that once we bring the import queue back up, it will give the queue the chance to clear a bit. (Also, we'd like to minimize the impact on LJ.)

  • [personal profile] helens78: Vote Ticky!
I am in favor of tickys because tickys are a form of communication. They can help engender community and relationships in a way that can enhance comments rather than replacing them or taking away from them. When someone isn't commenting, it's impossible to know if it's because they're lost for words, aren't on a platform suitable for lengthy comments (how many users read the site from smartphones now?), don't have a lot of spoons, have to conserve typing time... or aren't reading and don't care. Seeing people's names crop up repeatedly in tickys helps us discover who out there is giving us their time and attention, and can be a greatly-appreciated form of support, even or especially in times when hearing many individual comments -- and feeling obliged to respond to each of them -- can feel overwhelming.

Rumor has it that DW is going to be offering seed accounts again. For those of us who don't want one, can't afford $200 for one right now, or already have one, would there be any interest in some kind of parallel fundraising endeavor? We could use the term "grain" instead of "seed" (similar connotation, similar potentially-organic vegan term!), and make icons saying we're going after GRRRRRAAAAAIIIIINNNNSSSS, and... okay, really I just think the idea of dreamsheep zombies saying GRRRRRAAAAIIIINNNSSS is hysterical, but seriously, I think it could be a fun project.
  • What Privilege?: Non-survivor privilege and silence
Those of us who’ve experienced abuse, rape and other violations don’t keep it quiet because we’re ashamed. Or because it’s intensely personal. The main reason we keep it quiet is because we know how you’ll treat us if we tell you. We know you have a culturally-granted privilege to remain ignorant. To not know, and therefore not to be responsible. Not to bother. Not to think about it.

Giant centipede thing in my room this morning. It disappeared under my dresser before I found a shoe to kill it with. Ick. Anyone know if this is something I should legitimately be worried about (infestation, centipedes secretly carry zombie virus, IDK)?

Ate lunch in the presence of a bunch of cricket fans who had a large screen set up in the student center. No idea who was playing (between glare and giant pillars, I could barely see the screen well enough to figure out that it was cricket), but all the students seemed super-happy with what was going on.

I harbor an irrational resentment of the class right before The Networked Society. Now I need to go to bed, because I have to open at work tomorrow. (I have found a Thing that motivates me to be early to work. If I'm the first person there, I get to unlock the door and shut off the alarm. It makes me feel very special.)

Editing my stories as I did was an act of self-erasure: sometimes necessary to survive, but not okay, never okay, merely the lesser of two evils. Pretending that the world only contains straight people is not okay. Teaching your children that the world only contains straight people is not okay. It is a denial of that-which-is, a denial of c'thia. Treating any mention of same-sex romance as inherently more sexually explicit than an equivalent action of an opposite-sex couple is not okay. Trying to pretend that the only possible ethical instance of human sexual behavior is for reproduction is not okay. Teaching your children that is not okay either.

sofiaviolet: knotted strands of white and grey pearls (feminine)
Good news: the massive loss of appetite that resulted from my late February illness, secondary bacterial lung ick, and antibiotics? Gone.

This message brought to you by lunch last week (I have gone up a size in french fries, from small to medium) and dinner Thursday night (ate an entire entree, poori, and a pakora - no leftovers).

On Saturday, I went to a combined mac & cheese party and clothing swap/Big Moves costume spring cleaning. Several of the things I took home with me were Big Moves San Francisco or Big Burlesque costumes that came into Cameryn's possession when Heather MacAllister passed away. Now that Big Moves Boston is on probably-permanent hiatus (Cameryn's one-woman shows having taken over her life, and no one else having stepped up to run things), Cameryn wanted to get things out of her house while keeping them connected to their history.

And speaking of Cameryn, she is looking to sublet her apartment while she's on tour this year. Apartment near Stony Brook, with one roommate. There is a cat (supremely fluffy) who will, I believe, be staying with other people.

    It's link time.

  • Yes Means Yes: Mythcommunication: It’s Not That They Don’t Understand, They Just Don’t Like The Answer
I just read a paper from the discipline of conversation analysis. It dovetails nicely with what I wrote in Talking Past Each Other, and I’m going to go through some of the findings (I can’t redistribute the paper itself), and talk about some conclusions. Long story short: in conversation, “no” is disfavored, and people try to say no in ways that soften the rejection, often avoiding the word at all. People issue rejections in softened language, and people hear rejections in softened language, and the notion that anything but a clear “no” can’t be understood is just nonsense. First, the notion that rape results from miscommunication is just wrong. Rape results from a refusal to heed, rather than an inability to understand, a rejection. Second, while the authors of the paper say that this makes all rape prevention advice about communicating a clear “no” pointless, I have a different take. Clear communication of “no” isn’t primarily going to avoid miscommunication — rather, it’s a meta-message. Clear communication against the undercurrent that “no” is rude and should be softened is a sign of the willingness to fight, to yell, to report.

  • The Curvature: Louisiana Law Forces Many Sex Workers to Register as Sex Offenders
Because of the way that sex workers are generally made vulnerable to violence, as well as the ways that prisoners face frequent sexual assault, the most callous part of this practice may be the fact that such large numbers of those forced to register as sex offenders for non-violent offenses are victims of sexual violence themselves. Most of the women and men profiled in these articles talk about having been raped, whether as adults or children, whether by clients or family members, by prison guards or fellow prisoners. They must register as sex offenders, be unable to find employment or residences, face harassment and assault, and bear scarlet letters on their identification while at the same time, probably all of their actual rapists do not have to do the same. They have not only been raped, but been given their rapists’ punishments. They have not only been raped, but told that they are like, or perhaps worse than, their actual rapists.

[Originally posted at The Networked Society]

A bit of a throwback to our strength-of-weak-ties conversations: Tenured Radical: The Social Network: Or; Does Networking Really Matter To An Academic Career?

In this post, Tenured Radical argues that deliberately "networking" (or strategically cultivating lots of weaker ties) is not particularly beneficial to academic historians in terms of their career prospects. Knowing the right people will not automagically get you the job you want. (I suspect this to be broadly true almost everywhere, actually.)

I think one of the most important parts of this post is Tenured Radical's differentiation between the various things that can influence a hiring process. Networking for its own sake: not so helpful, especially when compared to the kinds of influences over which you have more limited control. On the other hand, given the general hype surrounding networking and the fact that you can make an effort to network, I am completely unsurprised that people glom onto networking even when it's of limited utility for their concrete goals: it's popular and it can give a sense of greater control over one's life.

Tenured Radical does see upsides to networking for less concrete and less self-centered goals (Getting Shit Done, exchange of information and ideas) than the job search. I think it's best summed up in this bit from the end: This, I think, reveals the basic value of networking: when it works, it isn't about you. It's about you in relation to others.

sofiaviolet: MS Paint person sadfacing while holding broom, with text: "clean *all* the things?" (clean all the things?)
Spent a decent chunk of time this weekend cleaning my room and getting rid of (or at least prepping to get rid of) stuff. Of course, I also went to Good Vibes after work on Friday and bought new toys, and South Bay yesterday... Heh. Yes.

My biggest mess is probably my clothes. For one thing, I don't put out-of-season clothes into storage; it's all in my closet all the time. I've also been the same size since at least my junior year of high school, which was six years ago. My wardrobe looks like identical triplets with very different tastes. Et cetera.

The cleaning is partly to have a clean room yay, partly so there is floor to unfold the futon onto whenever I next have houseguests of any sort, and partly so there is space for furniture rearranging.

I think that, on Tuesday (my one totally empty weekday), I will go around to various thrift stores and look for kickass vintage suitcases, since I've decided that's how I want to store all my *ahem* toys when I'm not actually using them. (If I strike out, I will buy one from teh internets, but I would like to avoid shipping charges.)

But others of you persist in coasting along at the level of the lowest common denominator, making cheap jokes, taking cheap shots, settling for cheap sexual encounters, and generally cheapening yourselves for the illusion of tribal acceptance, for the notion that the bros will somehow back you up when it counts, and so the hos don't matter much. sofiaviolet: Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge (zakim bridge)
Much of this essay annoys me, but I want to reproduce this quote:
But, in the digital world, you get to decide exactly who to be, where to go, and how to behave. This can be problematic if you try to create an entirely new persona (it’s a dishonest and unsustainable representation of yourself), but when wielded skillfully, it can propel the real you to new heights. Rather than create a whole new you, create the best you. Choose the traits you like about yourself, and exemplify them online. Let the less attractive qualities fall by the wayside. Place yourself in a digital environment that will allow you to flourish.

When I focus on creating an improved digital version of me, I find those qualities actually start to carry over into my physical self.
This is actually something I did in my offline life, parallel to beginning and sustaining my online life. I've referred to the name 'Sofia Blackthorne' (which I use in any context where my legal name is not required and where explaining myself won't be absurd) as an aspirational identity, by which I mean: I had an idea of who my ideal Me was, and I continued to develop that ideal self, and I named it so I'd have easier access to it all.

    links and stuff )

Now to get ready for my interview. It's going to be great but I am still super-nervous, of course.
