sofiaviolet: black and white EGL dress from Mary Magdalene (egl)
Thanksgiving was good. [personal profile] solarcat, Marina and Leroy came over.

We had duck gumbo. Ellie, in her determination to use the entire duck, rendered a whole bunch of fat to make the roux (too much; we now have a little container of duck fat in the fridge for future use), and made duck stock.

We also had rice dressing, apple pie, and cookies.

Friday, I was pretty exhausted. Ellie and I flyered for Slutcracker. We drove to Central Square, ate at Fourburgers, and went over to The Donkey Show.

Having been offline for a while by that point, I didn't have advance warning that Amanda Palmer and Neil Gaiman would be there. In retrospect, this was probably good. Much as I joke about how the fourth wall doesn't exist for anyone any more, I appreciate a sort of meatspace fourth wall - I'll go to signings and meet-and-greet events if my companions want to, but that's not an experience I seek on my own.

On Saturday, [personal profile] solarcat and I went to see Cobra Starship. It was a Boys Like Girls show, technically, but we were there for Cobra and we had m&g with them. [personal profile] solarcat had them sign her Harass Gabe shirt. I went with "something random" - the back of a 6x8 canvas board. I will twitpic some photos of the finished painting, as that seems to be the best method of getting them to the band.

sofiaviolet: lol internets (<3 internets)
Internet went out some time Wednesday afternoon. After many calls to Verizon tech support, we got a couple of technicians out here today (one of whom knows the landlady, lololololol). It is so damn good to be online again.

I am caught up on email, twitter, and journals I read via Dreamwidth. I'm still not caught up on comms/feeds read via DW or anything through LJ. I am hoping to make a post about what I have actually been doing with my time, but that will have to wait until tomorrow, because... [personal profile] solarcat and I will be going to see Cobra Starship tonight.

I have some Google Wave invites, should anyone out there want one. Or leave me your username so I can add you to my contacts. I am sofiaviolet, because I am most predictablest. Comments are screened.

$winterholiday card requests are still open! And if you have posted a wishlist somewhere, please link me to it. :D?

Take action to save the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program.

Ellie is apparently making duck gumbo for Thanksgiving because A) fuck turkey anyway and B) we will be feeding probably more people than a single roast duck would satisfy.

Today is Dad's birthday. (I am not actually sure if he still reads this. Mom does. I already said 'happy birthday' on the phone, but it doesn't hurt to mention it again.)

I've bugged my honors advisor again, about the junior/senior project this time. It's not a requirement for the honors program (one can earn a course distinction and/or project distinction, and I'm on track for the former), so unless the history department will let me count it as my capstone, I don't think I'll do it. The effort:tangible-benefit ratio just isn't good enough.

blah blah spring blah )

Why yes, yes that is two days off and no class earlier than half past one in the afternoon. *smugface*

sofiaviolet: architectural detail of the inside of a Catholic church (cathedral)
The Writer's Block prompt over at LJ made me lol. What (if any) books would you ban from a high school library? Are there certain subjects that you feel are inappropriate for teenagers regardless of literary merit?

The answer to that question is 'fuck that noise,' by the way. No hate speech (hate text(s)?). Other than that, I would rather teenagers read about sex than violence - but if I ruled the world, people wouldn't love/glorify/eroticize violence.

Related: my mom is a high school librarian right now (before that, she was retired, and before that, she was an elementary/middle school librarian, and before that, she was retired, and before that, she was a cataloger at a university). In particular, at a sports-oriented Catholic boys' school.

As I was such a voracious reader as a kid, she often turns to me for suggestions re: how to get these kids to read shit. We have come up with several solutions:
* books about sports! Biographies of athletes are relatively popular.
* the most mainstream-ly popular YA series of the moment! Teenage boys will apparently read Twilight and its sequels because their girlfriends do.
* graphic novels! This is fairly untested, as we are having trouble coming up with any graphic novels which will pass muster with the principal and interest the boys. Mom is not up on this stuff and pretty much everything I read would make the principal faint.

So your suggestions of graphic novels would be most appreciated, and remember that they must be read over and deemed appropriate by a rather conservative old Catholic [priest/friar/something].

Who wants a $winterholiday card?

I am screening comments to this post so people can post their addresses; I will unscreen comments that are not addresses.

Alternately, you may use either DW private message or LJ private message, or email sofiaviolet@sofiaviolet.com.

Please indicate which kind of card you would like (general winter theme, certain religious holiday, secular/commercial christmas, etc.).

[staff profile] denise would like to know how we use the update page.

This lolcat is relevant to knitters, particularly knitters with cats.

Odd thing I have been remembering off and on: last week, I had to call my credit card issuer because my card got demagnetized. While on the phone with Super Helpful Guy, I got an accidental 'sir.' cis privilege is never having to worry about other people messing up your pronouns and titles, getting to lol when they do, and not having to worry about what might have led to mis-gendering or what might happen next )

So, random fuckup. I keep wandering back to it, sometimes to lol and sometimes to poke at how unimaginably sucky it would have been for someone without the privilege of laughing it off.
sofiaviolet: crown and text: get excited and make things (get excited and make things)
whoops, half an entry from last week that never got posted )

And now what I actually came here to write about:

* BLACK DRAGON FIGHTING SOCIETY

* So my mom is going to look at all my shiny stuff when she gets up here, and then I will make her some jewelry and that will be $winterholiday. But that doesn't help with my dad or my sister.

* BLACK DRAGON FIGHTING SOCIETY

* Speaking of $winterholiday... many, many months ago, I made a post offering handmade goodies to the first five commenters. I fail at life and timeliness, and still owe [livejournal.com profile] insunshine and [livejournal.com profile] sinuous_curve their goodies. As soon as I post this, I will wander into the dining room and get started on their stuff. I will also take requests from up to three more people.

* BLACK DRAGON FIGHTING SOCIETY

Yeah, uh. That's all I got. I go make things now. BLACK DRAGON FIGHTING SOCIETY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NaNo, day 5: not so great. I got distracted by patterns on Ravelry.

I blame Dreamwidth, in a roundabout way - I know too many knitters because of it.

(I told my parents to get me yarn for $winterholiday, y'all.)

Dreamwidth Follow Friday

Here's the plan: every Friday, let's recommend some people and/or communities to follow on Dreamwidth. That's it. No complicated rules, no "pass this on to 7.328 friends or your cat will die". Just introduce us to some new things to read.

[personal profile] azurelunatic posts a lot of funny and a lot of thinky.

[personal profile] turlough is in MCR fandom and makes frequent fic-and-art rec posts, and has recently started posting recipes.

[personal profile] zorkian, also known as [staff profile] mark, got married not that long ago, plays video games and is getting into Warhammer, and is doing NaNo this year.

[community profile] accessibility_fail, for those times and places where you run into horribly stupidly inaccessible stuff. Profile says: All kinds of accessibility fail welcome: mobility-based, visual-based, physical-world, online-world, anything at all.

[community profile] boston, for those of you who live in or care about my current metropolitan area.

[syndicated profile] the_daily_wtf_feed, providing you with far more than your recommended daily dose of really bad code and assorted technology fail from people who should at least theoretically know better.

EDIT: [personal profile] yvi created [community profile] followfriday as a place to collect everyone's Follow Friday posts.
sofiaviolet: NaNoWriMo - easy peasy (nano: no plot)
Words: Well, uh. That's the thing.

Word tells me I have 6180 as of writing this entry. The NaNo word counter tells me I have 6267. This is good, actually, but the discrepancy is really bugging me when it comes to my super-detailed spreadsheet.

I am doing fine with regards to standard NaNo targets, but my personal goal was 2500 per day, and I haven't hit it yet this month. I mean, I have some excuses - burlesque on the 1st, random Amanda Palmer show on the 2nd. And it doesn't help that I'm behind three of my writing buddies right now (of seven who actually seem to be doing NaNo this year). Way to make me feel inadequate, guys (I still ♥ you).

Here, have a quote from the part of the story I'm not supposed to be working on yet:
He ducks his head, bites his lip – he's going to puke butterflies all over her if he opens his mouth, 'I like you' and 'I'm nervous' and 'please be okay with me' and 'please believe I'm okay.'
Perhaps I should do something with [personal profile] brother_marcus? I mean, I am writing his story for NaNo.

Notes on NaNo.

* Dreamwidth has just implemented a Latest Posts feed, which shows public posts from users and communities which have not opted out.

If you want to exclude your own posts from the Latest Posts feed, go to the Admin Console and enter set latest_optout yes.

To exclude posts in a community you maintain, go to the Admin Console and enter set for communityname latest_optout yes, where communityname is the name of your community.

Locked and private posts will not show up in the Latest Posts feed.

* The latest posts feed can also be filtered by certain site-defined tags to entries. Currently, the only such tag is nnwm09, for NaNoWriMo. If you want your public NaNo posts included on Latest Posts page for NaNoWriMo, you will need to tag them nnwm09 in addition to any other tags you may use.

* I am going to hate myself so much by December. Not just because 2500 words per day, but because those words are going to come from putting a character I really do love through hell many times over.

Or, when I can no longer cope with Marcus and his alcoholism/depression/dead and dying friends and relatives/et cetera, the words will come from the prickly young genius who does not like to talk to anyone, not even his creator. I guess it's cheating to have a backup novel to work on, but I do expect to burn out on And In Darkness, Light early and often throughout November.

(I should note that by the time AIDL is completed, Marcus will have found some stability and happiness. But for the ending to actually get written - well, I'm waiting on some people to deliver the framework I will need. And they will not be rushed - certainly not by the likes of me - and believe me when I say I'm not the only person going nuts over it all.)

[personal profile] damned_colonial suggests implementing a Follow Friday meme on Dreamwidth. I think I will rec one journal, one comm, and one feed every week, unless someone has a better idea.

In my recent past:

Thursday, Ellie and I went shoe shopping. She didn't find anything and I really don't need any more shoes, so we just headed home again. I called [personal profile] solarcat from the train and she met me at Forest Hills, and we drove back to her apartment to watch Life on the Murder Scene. (You guys. Their faces, okay, their fucking faces. I do not know what it would take to pry me from this fandom.)

By the time I got home, it was midnight, and I still had to pack for my trip.

weekend in Vermont )

It begins.

sofiaviolet: girl in purple dress carrying suitcase and walking down railroad tracks (travel)
I'm probably going to be offline most of the weekend - between the driving and the conference and the socializing, I won't have much time, and I will be trying to use what spare time I do have to write.

I haven't had a chance to read anyone's posts, DW or LJ, since Thursday morning, though I did skim a bit. I have barely had time to check my email. Assume I will be unavailable until Sunday evening.

:D

Overwhelmed.

sofiaviolet: upside-down crown and text: now panic and freak out (now panic and freak out)
*hands*

I was going to go to a dinner-and-a-lecture by a history professor I had my freshman year, but I procrastinated on getting a ticket, and now it's the day of the event and Ellie is sick (and required a thermometer today. Yesterday it was cough suppressant and cough drops) and I needed to meet [livejournal.com profile] 1001cranes downtown to hand over my ticket for The Used, since I can't go to the show because Ellie and I are leaving for Vermont Friday afternoon, and I'm hanging out with [personal profile] solarcat tomorrow evening (LOTMS whee!), and hopefully taking Ellie shoe shopping tomorrow afternoon, and I still haven't packed for the weekend in Vermont.

Speaking of Vermont! Ellie and I and two carloads of her friends are going to the Translating Identity Conference. I will probably be offline, but I am taking my laptop in order to maybe do some writing when I run out of cope.
sofiaviolet: candy hearts from a prescription bottle (and the blue ones help me fall)
Ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Or any sort of question, really.

I hope to get something relatively substantive up in the next few days, but a quick list:
* Work continues to be good.
* I haven't been doing enough writing and it bugs me.
* I haven't been doing enough anything lately, except for going out, and it bugs me.
* I know what I'm doing for NaNo (two ideas, actually - focusing on the more heart-wrenchingly miserable one, but will switch to the other one whenever I cannot go on *hands*).
* I suspect I need to go back up to 250 mg. Maybe even 300, but I'm scared to try that again since my memory was so badly affected last time. We'll see how I do between now and my next appointment.
