Related to Dreamwidth swag, [personal profile] damned_colonial explains how to get different colors and styles of t-shirt on Zazzle. Can be generalized to the rest of Zazzle, including other, non-clothing products.

[personal profile] rydra_wong: LJ is again tampering with your links to insert its own affiliate codes. This is the opt-out from the last round of affiliate-link shenanigans, and it seems to still work.

On today's agenda: roller derby! Ellie and I are stopping at some woodworking store on the way. Her tools already equal or exceed the value of her car, but she still doesn't have everything she needs. (In addition to set-building/theater tech and fine furniture, she plans to move into the woods one day and build her own house, and take a whole bunch of her friends who want lots of big dogs/unrestricted nudity/etc. with her.)

At some point, Ellie is going to build me a new garment rack. I had a mass-produced plastic/metal one, but it broke under the weight of my clothes. The new one will be made of two-by-fours and an oak dowel.
sofiaviolet: two purple flowers on a single stem (two little flowers)
I've locked my old LJ posts down to private; this means everything from journal creation to April 2009. There were a lot of posts I wanted to take down because of their content (particularly everything about The Ex), but I had neither the time nor the inclination to do item-level evaluation when I made the decision to lock those posts.

I am in the process of sorting through my various imported entries (I had many accounts prior to [livejournal.com profile] sofiaviolet, going all the way back to 2002), tagging the really old stuff, and unlocking what I feel comfortable sharing. I only want to do this once, and I only want to do it in one place. I'll post again when it's done.

Off to tackle 2002.

via [personal profile] charmian and [personal profile] the_shoshanna: LJ has been hacking your affiliate links. For at least a month, it seems.

Probably everyone reading this who cares already knows, but. Bob is no longer a member of My Chemical Romance. ;_; My mother cried when I told her, you guys, because she is One Of Us without the fanfic. This shit is not okay.

If you have the <lj user> tag more than once in your entries, with a user first and then a community, the RTE is eating the data between those tags.

Bug only seems to be occurring on LJ.

I have written almost 4000 words today. Not sure how that happened. Going to finish this entry and see how far I can get.

Tomorrow is my birthday. I will be 22. I have to go to work for 9am (my finding aid is ready to level up, although it will probably need a lot of work after Boss and I go over it), but classes don't start until the 11th.

ETA: By the way, guys. I do not answer my phone if I don't recognize the number. If you have my number and want me to ever pick up the phone when you call, PLEASE email your phone number to sofiaviolet@sofiaviolet.com, so I can add you to my phonebook.

This message brought to you by someone calling from a 631 number and not leaving a message.

ETA2: If you don't have my number but want it, email me! Though again, please give me your number so I know who the heck is calling/texting me.

ETA3: Broke 5k. I have no clue how, since I just sat around notficcing with myself. \o?

All the MCR fans reading this journal have probably already seen [livejournal.com profile] morebliss's Gerard Way picspam/quotespam, but my mom hasn't. (We are crossing our fingers so hard that they play New Orleans in June, so I can take my parents.)

Speaking of my parents! They will be here on Saturday!! !!!!!!!

As of their next code push (and LJ's code pushes tend to happen on Thursdays), LiveJournal will require all users to specify "male" or "female" for their account's gender. No third option.

The change is almost certainly to target advertising in a more gender-stereotyped way.

EDIT: 2009-12-15 10:30 EST
Probably thanks to the many people contacting LJ, the code has been pulled. It will not be going live in the next code push.

Unfortunately, I don't trust LJ not to attempt to sneak something like this through again.

[personal profile] synecdochic has a summary. She suggests going to the Edit Profile page and changing your gender to Unspecified, contacting Feedback, and emailing the GM of US operations at anjelika@livejournalinc.com.

Geek Feminism also has a post.

If anyone reading this would like a Dreamwidth account (Dreamwidth's diversity statement specifically includes and "welcome[s] people of any gender identity or expression"), I have some invite codes, and if they run out, I'm willing to buy accounts for people who need them.

[staff profile] denise asks over in [site community profile] dw_biz: How many icon slots would be "enough" for you?

Looks like LJ got notifications back up - the message at status.livejournal.org has changed and I got a few day-old post notifications in my inbox (and a couple of very recent icon notifications). They say it'll take about 24 hours for the backlog to clear. I have no idea whether the email half of the system had started sending out the delayed stuff, since I haven't been waiting on any.
sofiaviolet: a cracked egg with bandaids holding it together (cracked)
Over the course of my less-than-eight hours of sleep, my LJ flist received over 200 vgifts. Needless to say, I disabled the notifications, because I was having trouble finding actual posts and shit.*

Although that doesn't so much matter right now, I guess, since LJ managed to break its own notification system. The whole thing is down until they figure out what's wrong and how to fix it. Although I will kind of lol if the thing that broke it was the umpteen-MILLION snowflake vgifts that people have been sending. Are they free or something?

* I no longer use /friends to read my flist. I have tracked each journal I read, which delivers the full text of people's posts to my LJ inbox (or a "you can't see this, neener" message if you locked it down after the notification was sent) and cuts down on the number of different places I have to go to keep up with everyone and everything. But since notifications are down, I am not receiving posts. I just hope they mean that bit about queueing everything until notification deliveries can resume. Otherwise I will just miss however many hours/days of posts, because seriously.

Ellie's car wouldn't start this morning. Seems to be the battery more than anything else, but it's an old, high-mileage car with at least two "fix me" lights on, so who knows what else might be wrong.

Bossboss is out every day this week except Thursday.

So of course today was the apocalypse. In the form of sewage leaking through the ceiling in the storage area.

Fortunately, we received warning early enough to save all materials - a few boxes got moved, and Second-in-Command covered some shelves with plastic sheeting, and they appear to have stopped the leak relatively quickly.

The library's water was off for most of the day, and hazmat guys kept trooping through the workroom. All in all, most distracting.

It begins.

I'm probably going to be offline most of the weekend - between the driving and the conference and the socializing, I won't have much time, and I will be trying to use what spare time I do have to write.

I haven't had a chance to read anyone's posts, DW or LJ, since Thursday morning, though I did skim a bit. I have barely had time to check my email. Assume I will be unavailable until Sunday evening.

:D

LJ was hit by some malicious flash.

People who have analyzed the malicious code say that it just harvests your email address for spam purposes and replicates itself, but you may wish to expire all your LJ sessions to be safe.

Please check the most recent few entries on your LJ. The exploit replicates itself by inserting code into a recent entry by each user who views it while logged in, making the affected post(s) public if they weren't already.

If you find an infected post, you'll want to edit it to:
* restore its security setting (infected posts are changed to public),
* restore its metadata (the exploit deletes current music/mood/location and uses the default icon),
* remove the malicious code.

from [livejournal.com profile] thelemic

My username is [personal profile] sofiaviolet.

My journal name is Sofia Violet Emilie Blackthorne. I picked out my own name - a combination of not having ever liked what my parents named me and long-term immersion in pseudonymous cultures. I was originally planning to keep my middle name, but Sofia Emilie does not flow.

My journal title is "picked a handful of violets in my name," which comes from a poem I started but haven't finished. It's about lesbians. // My journal title is "The Love Letter Sessions," which was the title of a poem I wrote in high school. It was about lesbians.

My journal subtitle is "right between the scapulae, back of the heart," which is from another poem I wrote. The first assignment for my spring 2009 poetry workshop was to answer the question "What is poetry?" // My journal subtitle is "a life you don't despise." I think it's a lyric, but I ran into it out of context, as someone else's journal title or subtitle.

My reading page is "relevant to my interests." Because it's true. // My friends page is "Friends or Enemies," because of that website.

My default userpic is a little drawing of violets I turned up in a google image search.

sofiaviolet: Dreamwidth logo and Paul Gross arms (dreamwidth \o/)
So there was a big huge code push at Dreamwidth last night.

* The importer and crossposter now talk to each other. This means that an entry crossposted to LJ (or another site) can be re-imported (for instance, to consolidate comments) without creating a duplicate entry.
As a result of that, I'm re-enabling comments on crossposts to LJ, and will be importing them to DW periodically.

If you can't access livejournal: your ip address is probably blocked. Try rebooting your router and/or modem and/or computer, which should reset your ip address, which will hopefully let you access the site.

I can access my lj inbox and individual entries on my friends' journals, although I'm having trouble staying logged in for any length of time.

This might be a good time to note that I'm no longer using my lj friendspage - I've either set up a feed on Dreamwidth (for journals whose content is public and journals that haven't friended me) or subscribed to you such that your entries appear in my lj inbox along with comment notifications and stuff. This cuts down the number of places I have to visit to keep up with things.

This might also be a good time to remind everyone that there is absolutely no new-and-unique content on my lj - everything originates at DW. If you are using both sites, Dreamwidth is where you should be reading me.

Also also also! I have ten Dreamwidth invites right now, if anyone wants one. Otherwise they will sit, sad and unused, until I come up with good usernames for my fictional characters.
sofiaviolet: i blame fandom (I blame fandom.)
If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, (even if we don't speak often or ever) please post a comment with a COMPLETELY MADE UP AND FICTIONAL memory of you and me.

It can be anything you want - good or bad - BUT IT HAS TO BE FAKE.

When you're finished, post this little paragraph in your LJ and see what your friends come up with.

So, I guess LJ and Twitter are down? :\ Not cool, internets.

EDIT: Dreamwidth is not down! I have invite codes! (I would be tweeting that, but - well, Twitter is down.)
sofiaviolet: a laptop, a notebook, and lots of pencils (writing)
I mean, I've been carrying it around since last March. It's a 5-subject composition book, and I tend to write pretty small. Lots of pages. Lots of words. It survived my MCR trip last May (without getting barfed on, which is more than I can say for my pants), and I've brought it with me almost everywhere.

The front cover is starting to tear away from the binding, and the entire cover/binding is separating from the pages. I need to repair it somehow. I think the answer is... duct tape. It usually works. Or I can ask at work, since someone there has probably done a wee bit of conservation on something.

One of the reasons I love writing in notebooks is that I can ignore my inner editor. I have to keep going - damn the plot holes and the continuity fail - or else pick a different scene to start writing. I do more writing on my computer, but sometimes I just need a notebook. If I'm feeling distractable, especially.

Of course, I look for all sorts of ways to make myself write. Unfortunately, I can't participate in [community profile] kink_bingo because I don't write fanfic, but I am going to use their list as a way of prompting myself. Writing a random sex scene is a good way to get in my daily words, and sometimes it's helpful with regards to characterization.

[livejournal.com profile] bexless: Size Queen. Femmeslash om nom nom. Written for [community profile] kink_bingo.

If you post cool content but you didn't have me friended on LJ, I set up a feed on DW (since I was only seeing your public posts anyway) and defriended you on LJ. I'm trying to centralize myself on Dreamwidth as much as possible. I won't abandon my LJ-based friends, but if I was just a follower, then whatever.

Someone is setting off fireworks, and has been every night since Saturday. It's annoying and it really upsets my upstairs neighbor's dog. >:(

My computer did actually die of water damage. It just took two weeks for the logic board to fry all the way through.

So it's off for repairs, and I don't know when I'll get it back. I'm hoping for some time next week and fearing that's too optimistic.

I am checking my email once or twice a day, but I'm not going to be reading my flist until I get my own computer back. I'll try to catch up then, but no guarantees.

... oh, who am I kidding? Yes, I'll catch up, although it might take me anywhere from a couple of days to the better part of a week, depending on what else is going on.

ETA: Wow, I'm all kinds of dumb lately. I never actually posted about this. But yeah, in a stunning display of fail, I dumped about three ounces of water on my laptop on July 27th. It finally gave up the ghost on August 8th.
sofiaviolet: drawing of three violets and three leaves (Default)

Yeah, didn’t get much writing done on Friday. Or today, for that matter, although there are still some hours left during which I might accomplish something. Although chances are it’ll be something to do with mysql. (I’m hoping to keep the amount of Dad-pestering to a minimum. Yes, he knows a lot about sql. No, he does not have endless time to teach me.)

There’s a post about race bouncing around inside my head. I ought to get it out. The people I see every day, who I’ll sit next to on the T if given half a chance, the subconscious assumptions I make.

synecdochic wants your thoughts on a hypothetical new journaling service and elsejournal could be interesting. In the meantime, all content will originate here and get crossposted to LJ and IJ.

Meh. Gonna take the lj-strike time and get some more writing done. My output tanked after spring break. Well, tomorrow I'm going to write. Tonight I have to do an assignment for linguistics. Last of its kind, yay, and it shouldn't be very hard. I just don't really feel like working on it.

In the future, I'll probably be updating through my wordpress blogs The Love Letter Sessions and Auriel, but since they're both configured to crosspost here, you shouldn't see much difference.

ETA: Also. Database software that: is free, will work on a Mac, and doesn't take mad skillz. And by software I really mean mysql clients, because I have successfully installed mysql, but I cannot figure out where to go from here. /o\
