sofiaviolet: road signs in Boston: Storrow Dr., Callahan Tunnel, surface artery, detour (Boston)

LiveJournal is my first apartment. The landlord was a nice enough guy, but he wasn't very good at being a landlord (Brad). And he lived way far away, which was also bad for his responsiveness (LJ's various owners post-Brad). The walls were painted ooky colors and there was ugly woodwork and some of the rooms weren't finished (S2). And this one time, the power company was supposed to shut off the people in the apartment downstairs, but they turned off my power instead (strikethrough). There was a lot of broken glass and trash on the sidewalk outside (ads). Because of where I lived, I couldn't get home easily after the T shut down for the night, and even when the trains were in service, I always had to transfer at least once (interoperability fail).

Dreamwidth is my current apartment. The owners live up on the third floor ([staff profile] mark and [staff profile] denise), and they took the time to meet me before I moved in (lots of posts about what Dreamwidth would be and why). I went over there a few days before I moved in (closed beta), and they were painting the walls and putting up new blinds (site improvements). End result: the whole place looks nicer, and I have permission to repaint the walls myself if I want (improved style system). They even brought down some food when I couldn't go home for Thanksgiving (shiny new features). When the power went out, they had already called the power company and they told me about the exploding transformer and they brought some matches and candles for until the power came back on (responsiveness to site problems). It's on the first floor, which was great when my sibling needed knee surgery and crutches and stuff (accessibility), even if it's not actually wheelchair-friendly (accessibility still under construction). I can walk home from most places in town, and I'm a lot closer to school and all my friends (OpenID support). This apartment is more expensive (paid account cost, invite codes), but it's so much better than the other one that I think it's worth it.

In fact, I love the neighborhood so much, I've been encouraging all my friends to move. Some of them have already found places, some are looking... and for some, this just isn't the right place for them. We won't lose touch, though - I can still hang out with them on their turf (crossposting) and they can come visit me (current and planned improvements to OpenId support).
