Well, shit.
Friday, February 27th, 2009 17:57EDIT: Looks to have been broken since mid-February.
So, bullet points:
* If you think you know how to fix this! Please tell me so I can try. I have been using Vienna for Mac.
* If you have made any important friends-only posts recently, poke me so I can be sure to check your journal.
* Since I find the friendspage a lot less efficient than a reader, friendslist trimming ahoy.
EDIT: Ugh, fuck all this. I'm going to be assembling some filters to make my life a little easier (refresh once a day versus refresh every five minutes, kind of thing).
My life, so fascinating. *sarcasm*
Monday, February 2nd, 2009 14:42But still. :(
Went shopping yesterday, because it was in the 40s and I was tired of being inside. I now own purple jeans, you guys. IDEK. Also, hot pink and black striped tights which claim to contain cashmere. Also also I almost bought these shoes in black, but I couldn't make up my mind, and I have another pair coming in the mail anyway. Maybe I will go back and get those shoes if the ones I ordered don't fit.
I also bought a pink umbrella with white polka dots (H&M always has cute ones, and they get squished to death in my bag on a fairly regular basis). And Georgina Westbrook has moved on from demanding that I buy her jewelry. Now I also have to buy her nice underwear. She was annoyed that there wasn't a matching bra. Fictional characters. /o\
Accidentally stayed on the train when they expressed it from Jackson Square to Forest Hills. Oops. I do that occasionally. Followed a girl out the Washington St. exit and walked home from there - it's not that far.
Stopped by the bakery. I asked for 6 French rolls. They had 5. At 9:30.
Bakery. >:[
Wonderful lecture today on ancient Egyptian religion - so of course I had a worldbuilding brainwave. This is going to be fun, for several disparate values of "fun."
Hm. Think I might take a nap.
general fyi
Monday, August 11th, 2008 22:39So it's off for repairs, and I don't know when I'll get it back. I'm hoping for some time next week and fearing that's too optimistic.
I am checking my email once or twice a day, but I'm not going to be reading my flist until I get my own computer back. I'll try to catch up then, but no guarantees.
... oh, who am I kidding? Yes, I'll catch up, although it might take me anywhere from a couple of days to the better part of a week, depending on what else is going on.
ETA: Wow, I'm all kinds of dumb lately. I never actually posted about this. But yeah, in a stunning display of fail, I dumped about three ounces of water on my laptop on July 27th. It finally gave up the ghost on August 8th.
Let’s see how this goes.
Saturday, March 22nd, 2008 17:24Yeah, didn’t get much writing done on Friday. Or today, for that matter, although there are still some hours left during which I might accomplish something. Although chances are it’ll be something to do with mysql. (I’m hoping to keep the amount of Dad-pestering to a minimum. Yes, he knows a lot about sql. No, he does not have endless time to teach me.)
There’s a post about race bouncing around inside my head. I ought to get it out. The people I see every day, who I’ll sit next to on the T if given half a chance, the subconscious assumptions I make.
synecdochic wants your thoughts on a hypothetical new journaling service and
elsejournal could be interesting. In the meantime, all content will originate here and get crossposted to LJ and IJ.

update on the story my computer ate
Friday, March 7th, 2008 00:32Today (yesterday technically, but I haven't gone to bed yet, so.), I began rewriting the story itself. Two false starts later, I am about 1400 words in (although probably more, because I seem to be fitting at least 250 words on a page).
The story that I lost was about five thousand words long, and in it, the protagonists had met twice and were just barely getting down to the sex they weren't supposed to have until the last part.
In these 1400+ words, the protagonists have met, just as in the vanished story. Unlike in that story, they've only met once so far. And I am now 600+ words into (or probably 2/3 of the way through) a sex scene that is without a doubt the most explicit thing I've ever written that doesn't read like one-sided chatfic.
Currently:
Georgina: is loud. has issues, but not as many as I thought.
Sal: doesn't really know her, but is kinda totally in love with her body.
MJ: turned up his music and is wishing he went to see his girlfriend tonight.
Sofia: wishes her characters would behave.
Pardon me while I kill all technology.
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 20:02Not this time. I should have known something was up when it didn't prompt me to save my project under a specific name. I've tried to open the backup and all I get is an error message and absolutely no data.
Eight hundred words of outline and five thousand words (of the first part of a five part story) have vanished into the ether.
The only good news is, when I rewrite this, maybe my characters will behave themselves and not decide they're going to have sex in the first chapter. And I do have a very sparse version of that outline in a notebook, that I can consult. And since all of this was written on March 2, 3, and 4, I mostly remember it.
My next attempt to write will be taking place in a notebook, thank you very much.
ETA: In an hour and a half, wrote almost a thousand words of outline just for the part of the story my computer ate. \o/ Will finish rewriting outline when I wake up.
Now I'm gonna put my fist through a computer.
Friday, January 25th, 2008 11:47ETA: Tested things with Office 2004, and the attachment didn't break. So it seems to be a problem with the most recent version of Office.
So, I'll head back to the lab after this class, save the file in an older format (which I'd need to do anyway, so I can open it on my computer), and email it again. I hope the lab is unlocked when I get back there, and that there's not a class in there.
ETA 2: I tried using a computer in Shillman, but those apparently don't have Office. So I tried a computer in the library. Also no Office. And another one, which had Office, but its ability to Save As had been TURNED OFF.
Fucking hell. I don't suppose any of you have Office 2007 and would be willing to convert a file and send it back to me?
ETA 3: Dad attempted to convert it for me with some third-party thing, because he's got Office 2002, and it only converted the first sheet.
But never mind, guys. The reason I wanted that file was because I completed 90% of an assignment in it, but I just redid that 90%, plus the other 10%, plus the extra credit section. In about 30 minutes.
Srsly. My stapler choked; the squishy bit of my hand between my thumb and wrist feels bruised from trying to driver staples through that mess. I had to steal paper from
Also,
Whatever. I have class in an hour and twenty and I am actually in possession of everything I need to keep on passing linguistics, and at least I haven't put my fist through any electronics this morning.
Yet. There's still time, because today is comp sci.
ETA: Yeah, for some reason, my computer in the lab has decided I don't have permission to access Firefox, so I'm stuck with IE. I'd be willing to bet this problem extends to other programs I'm actually required to use over the course of the semester. Gah.
Also, our little Excel experiment about savings has me worried. I need an account I can't raid at random.
ETA 2, because I'm trying not to spam: The mouse attached to my lab computer is very "sticky," not in terms of the mouse itself, but in terms of how the cursor behaves on the screen. Note to self: bring kleenex to next class, clean ball and internal bits.
• wrote awful lyrics on my Sidekick (by saving them as drafts of texts, there has got to be a better way but I'm too clueless to have learned it yet) on my way to the station
• almost got knocked over at Ruggles by some asshat running for an Orange Line train
• broke 43000 words
• screamed a lot of obscenities at our wireless network, our neighbors' shitty but unsecured wireless network I sometimes mooch off of when ours is broken, and Safari
Now I will
• drink some water
• take aspirin
• get some sleep
ETA: I set up all the tags and userpic and everything and then I forgot to post. Made of fail, and also way tireder than I thought.
It runs great and I am busy setting everything up (the migration assistant thingy is beyond helpful, though), and I'm having a bit of trouble getting used to the keyboard and trackpad. The keys are too far apart and they take more force than the iBook keyboards did, and the trackpad is just really huge.
iTunes is being an asshat, though. Apparently I need to update it before it will be able to open the existing library file? *headdesk*
Now I need to name it and its hard drive. Hmm.
Writing update.

“You’re older than Piper. Still younger than I’d hoped, though.”
Al: less freaked out about being five years older than Sam than he ought to be (also, world's cuddliest gangster)
Sam: amused and flattered (also, thinks Al looks cute in his friends' bands' merch)
Word count: 2961
Pages: 11/~15
Plot: Next up: Nicolas throws a party, Sam's parents are Not Pleased, and some kind of resolution.
Chances I'll beat the supposed minimum of 15 pages: 92.6%

Also, I now have a MacBook winging its way to me. ^-^ Mom may want my iBook, or I might wind up selling it, she hasn't made up her mind yet.

Happy birthday to
It's been and will likely continue to be one of those days.
Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 08:22I wrote my composition for Italian this morning, on no breakfast and not enough sleep. I had to google "so" and "same" for fuck's sake. So glad my job interview had to be rescheduled, not so glad that this delays gainful employment of me for at least a few days.
Apparently today is World Mental Health Day or something. Um. Thank god for the posts about it on my flist, otherwise I might've walked out of the house sans crazymeds. Speaking of which, I've been instructed to actually carry some Wellbutrin with me, in case I am out later than I expect or (far more likely) forget to take the morning dose and only realize it when the train pulls into Aquarium and I'm already running five minutes late to class.
To summarize:
Things Sofia's brain is good at: writing, remembering certain kinds of trivia and also song lyrics, keeping Sofia entertained when the outside world fails to do so, coordinating cute outfits.
Things Sofia's brain is bad at: interpersonal relationships, remembering anything that Sofia did more than two seconds but less than two weeks ago, remembering anything that Sofia did more than five years ago, maintaining happymaking levels of brain chemicals without assistance.
ETA: Tell me
TUTORIAL: Random text/images.
Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007 22:17Please note that this is not a tutorial for random background images; check
( code and directions, whee )
If anyone reading this actually knows what they're doing and has clarifications/corrections for these directions, I bow before your superior knowledge; please comment.
Italian was lovely. Binetti says we're not allowed to call him "professor" or we fail. That'll be a fun class, very low pressure. Gender and Society in Modern Europe in a little less than an hour.
My stomach really hurts. Dammit. On the other hand, I have a pretty Frankie icon. That makes me feel a little better.
It's weird to burn cds for your mom, y/n? Because I've acquired a lot of stuff I think she'd like since the last one I made for the car. I need to buy some blank cds, though. But they come in, like, 100 packs. I won't need anywhere near all of them, so I'll make people mix cds. Seriously.
Just comment or shoot an email to sofiaviolet @ (gmail.com, sofiaviolet.com, livejournal.com, they all work) and I'll make a mixtapecd for you. Because I'm awesome like that.
I haven't done bullet points in a while.
Tuesday, July 17th, 2007 23:34• Why does the spam I get claim it's from people like Seymour England and Orlando Rankin? Or else it's in Chinese. Or from the U.K. Lottery.
• I am trying to get my FTP client to update itself and it's refusing to do so. Stupid thing. On the other hand, I have downloaded many shiny new games.
• Re Your Brains - Jonathan Coulton (right-click)
• Icon post soon, as in "as soon as I get them uploaded and the entry coded."
Computer functional once again.
Wednesday, June 20th, 2007 20:16Happy birthday,
Flying home tomorrow.
