Here's the plan: every Friday, let's recommend some people and/or communities to follow on Dreamwidth. That's it. No complicated rules, no "pass this on to 7.328 friends or your cat will die". Just introduce us to some new things to read.
So today at work I am checking the contents of a very large number of 3.5" floppies. Some of them were used in Macs but can be read by the PC I'm using. I can tell because the Mac system files are visible: DESKTOP, RESOURCE.FRK, FINDER, etc.
The disk I'm currently evaluating? Two of the hidden Mac system files claim to be last modified on March 17th, 2034.

Catholic schools in New Orleans have the day off. The archbishop made it so. *jealousface*
Today I am wearing a t-shirt from Rock'n'Bowl (it has a fleur de lis on it and is black with gold print, and also a New Orleans institution), the Mardi Gras earrings
kythryne of Wyrding Studios made me, and one of my two Mardi Gras pendants (because at some point I acquired a second one, apparently).

Friday, February 5th, 2010 12:18People in/near Boston: Ellie is looking for laser hair removal or electrolysis in the near future. Any advice, experiences, recommendations, warnings, etc?
Also, happy birthday, Ellie. (Not that she will see this.) We are getting delicious noms with cool people in celebration.

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010 13:51In non-cranky news... uh. I have been mostly going to class and sleeping too much. Hoping my blahs clear up soon. I am just feeling kind of stagnant and weird. /o\
must have been the fairy dust
Saturday, January 30th, 2010 21:20Hello, folks! Internet is fixed. I have no idea how. (Ellie's theory is that someone else in the neighborhood called in a problem early enough to get a Saturday tech, and that this problem is similar to the issue we had at Thanksgiving, where the tech had to do something atop a telephone pole. So a neighbor's fix might have also helped us.)
Last night, we went to a Shirtless Shindig to celebrate Jamie's top surgery. The guest of honor himself made me pasties out of adhesive-backed glittery craft foam, and requested that he be allowed to style my hair on unspecified future occasions (apparently, he does lovely updos). ♥ my burlesque-affiliated friends. They always create a comfy, accepting atmosphere in small group situations like the Shirtless Shindig.

Am on campus, despite this being one of my days off. I was very tempted to wear this shirt, but I was too lazy to find it.
Verizon DSL needs to go DIAF, seriously. But they can send a tech! On Monday! When I have ALL OF THE CLASSES.
(Will keep phone on vibrate in pocket and sit near the door, ready to bail instantly. If the tech fails to call beforehand so I can actually, you know, leave class and come home - I will lose my fucking mind, I swear.)
Temptation to return to Comcast: rising. They were twice as expensive, but my internet did not die seemingly without reason, and always right before a holiday/weekend so that getting a tech takes even longer.

Thursday, January 28th, 2010 23:24Signed up for
12in2010. I am aiming for 12 completed stories. Length, content, style, and other such things don't matter. I just want to get a dozen of my stories done, so I can feel like I haven't wasted a third of my life.*
I also signed up at
copper_street for a 2010 overall goal of 200k words. Should be doable.
* Yes, this means they'll be
auriel stories. And I designed my goal to force myself to post them.

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010 17:11[Probably of little interest to anyone but me; feel free to skip.]
When I go to New Orleans this summer, my plans are mainly:
1. eat good food
2. research
3. hang out with my parents
4. reclaim some of my stuff
I know there are books I want. There's also a folding table and two folding chairs which were in my bedroom at Fiona's house in Atlanta. The table will be of immediate use in my bedroom, and the chairs will probably go toward extra seating when Ellie hosts gatherings.
Mom can probably have boxes ready for me, because Mom is good at that kind of advance planning. Then I just pack up what I want, and we haul my shit to Fedex. Same process as the initial "Ellie and Sofia move to Boston" thing, just on a much smaller scale.
But before I can really bring more of my stuff to Boston, I need to finish dealing with the stuff I already have.
( my bedroom )
( crafting space/dining room )
And yes, I can post pictures when it's all done.

Thursday, January 14th, 2010 21:56I'm supposed to keep a weekly log for my honors seminar, Being "Crazy" in America, in which I record and reflect on stuff about mental health issues that I've stumbled upon (or sought out, but I'll find enough via my reading page). I will be using my journal for this, and you are welcome to comment. Also, I suspect it will be more frequent than 'weekly,' because of how quickly the internet moves.
Most of the following was written yesterday, around lunchtime.

Sunday, January 10th, 2010 21:17( blah blah ipod problems )
I suspect this ipod is in its death throes. :\
Got another series of calls from last week's unidentifiable number - finally picked up on their third attempt and confirmed that it was a wrong number. Hopefully the guy figures out what number he really needs to call, and stops waking me up.
Ellie and I went shopping today. I got a bunch of candles at Target. Also a purple plaid cape. We got groceries and then came home and ate the entire box of frozen mozzarella sticks.
Dreamwidth code push soon (8pm Pacific)! I will try to answer comments first - ikea hacker accidentally my weekend.

New hard drive has arrived. Time Machine did its first backup last night while I made myself dinner (small pieces of chicken thigh and onions, sprinkled with thyme/cumin/garlic powder/cayenne, deglazed with vermouth and and a wee bit of soy sauce, and served in a bowl of chicken ramen - was good, will try again).
1TB drive has two partitions: the cleverly named Time Machine, which is for automatic backups, and ExternalBrain, for anything that doesn't need to be on my computer all the time (video, possibly my fandom-related picture folders).
ExternalBrain also currently contains my old backups, which were made manually whenever my computer would do something nervous-making. There is a lot of duplication, and it will take a while to sort through the backups to figure out what goes back onto the Macbook, what stays on ExternalBrain, and what can be safely discarded.
LJ: beware the RTE
Sunday, January 3rd, 2010 20:24If you have the <lj user> tag more than once in your entries, with a user first and then a community, the RTE is eating the data between those tags.
Bug only seems to be occurring on LJ.

I have written almost 4000 words today. Not sure how that happened. Going to finish this entry and see how far I can get.
Tomorrow is my birthday. I will be 22. I have to go to work for 9am (my finding aid is ready to level up, although it will probably need a lot of work after Boss and I go over it), but classes don't start until the 11th.
ETA: By the way, guys. I do not answer my phone if I don't recognize the number. If you have my number and want me to ever pick up the phone when you call, PLEASE email your phone number to sofiaviolet@sofiaviolet.com, so I can add you to my phonebook.
This message brought to you by someone calling from a 631 number and not leaving a message.
ETA2: If you don't have my number but want it, email me! Though again, please give me your number so I know who the heck is calling/texting me.
ETA3: Broke 5k. I have no clue how, since I just sat around notficcing with myself. \o?

My parents have gone home. I'm quite tired in the wake of their visit - more people time than I'm really used to, even if they are family-people.
(Next time, I think we are going to visit them in December. Brrr.)
and a handful of norsemen
Tuesday, December 29th, 2009 21:14Dad and I ate at the local-ish (I think it's a small chain) Mexican restaurant last night; Ellie was taping Cameryn's standup comedy routine and Mom figured we were eating too late and she would get heartburn when she went to bed. Was tasty. Tonight, we went to one of the two Indian restaurants on Centre Street.
Today, we went to Ikea. After some tasty breakfast from their restaurant (Mom and Dad's was free and so was their coffee, yay promotial freebies!), we went through the whole store.
( cut because no one but me cares what we got )
And then we had to fit all the stuff we got into Ellie's car. After a lot of rearranging, putting all the small things inside larger ones, and breaking one of the Trones things into its three sections ... everything fit! With a couple of things in the back seat with me and Mom, and Ellie's snow shovel up front with Dad. And with the other Trones tied to the roof rack - and then we had to drive home on the highway in high winds with a big plastic thing tied to the car. /o\
And now Ellie and I have to go back, because the Stora loft bed was out of stock. Yes, after three years, I am finally upgrading from the $25 futon frame I've used for the past two and a half years! And other stuff, since we're in the process of rearranging the apartment (getting rid of our b0rked tv, for one).

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009 01:34Bookmarklets which allow you to reload Dreamwidth pages in each of the site schemes.
I must credit the creator(s) of the style=mine and format=light bookmarklets, whose names I have lost to time, since all I did was swap in "usescheme"* and the scheme names.
But I hope that someone out there finds these useful.
* The lesser-known sibling of style=mine and format=light is usescheme=foo, where foo is the name of the site scheme you want to, well, use.
ETA: Fixed a bug! The bookmarklets now work for non-siteschemed entries (such as this one). Please reinstall any you're using to take advantage of this expanded functionality. (Thanks to
foxfirefey for introducing me to style=site!)

Since my last post...
Monday, December 28th, 2009 15:53December 22nd: So remember how we were going to drive to the Thai restaurant in Harvard Square? This was the same day the Red Line derailed. Harvard Square was choked with very-essential buses, serving as Red Line replacements as well as the usual ones that go through Harvard Square (including a derailed electric bus, whose pole had detached from the overhead line). But I had delicious panang curry which was insanely hot.
December 23rd: I don't think we did anything of import, since none of us can remember what we did. Meh.
December 24th: We went to Windsor Button, the local yarn shop downtown. I fondled a lot of very nice yarn but got some very basic stuff, as I am a n00b to knitting.
December 25th: Christmas. We opened the package from Ellen and Greg - nifty stuff, including poetry books and a superhero necktie packaged in a big tin. (Tin containing superhero tie and other things also contained a very large spider, oops.)
December 26th: Gardner Museum. Mom really wanted to go. Was awesome.
December 27th (yesterday): Union Oyster House for lunch. Museum of Science!! Much coolness, including the electrical show (Ellie had seen it before, courtesy of IEEE, and got to go up in the small Faraday cage to get lightning hurled at her, omgcool). Absolutely worth $20.
December 28th (today): Went to the land of big box stores, aka South Bay. Our plans had also included Stop and Shop, but after buying a slow cooker, a garment rack, a sunlight lamp, toilet paper and paper towels, a blender, and a compound miter saw... there was officially no more room in Ellie's Subaru. Including room for people.
Tomorrow is for Ikea. o_O
