I've just learned that one cannot knock an insect out of the air with an aerosol air freshener. In the end, when the gigantic bug evaded capture and failed to be grounded, I used the spray to direct it out my bedroom door and into the unfinished part of the attic.

My room smells heavily of lilacs now.
