sofiaviolet: Hello Kitty wearing a pink bow (Hello Kitty)
[personal profile] sofiaviolet
Today is a lovely lovely day of nothing! I slept until after two.

I made two icons using images from Hyperbole and a Half's This is Why I'll Never be an Adult, with the text changed:
fight all the oppressions! and fight all the oppressions?
  • [personal profile] rydra_wong: Ankle-strengthening exercises
These are not particularly unusual or imaginative, but they do work, either for rehabbing an injured ankle or as "prehab" to try and avoid injury (if you're a boulderer, trust me, you want to do these). And the balance work in particular is great for the whole body, not just the ankles.
  • [personal profile] charmian: Interoperability vs. Preservation of Site Culture
In general, also, I am sympathetic to Matgb's desire to use DW in a highly interoperable way. IMHO, one of the reasons behind LJ's decline is that in an age where interoperability is becoming more and more important, it's still lagging behind. Tumblr, Posterous, WP.com, all of these allow you to easily push your updates to other platforms. I think it is highly desirable that DW also become an open platform in this way; however, if outside readers/commenters are considered a negative force, then this openness will be decreased.
  • [personal profile] dingsi: Fannish is who identifies as such? Or what? How? Where am I?
... What jumps out at me though is a... a division between "Fandom" and "non-Fandom", which seems to flare up now and again. In these discussions, what I often see (or perceive?) are assumptions such as: "Fandomers" aren't "normal" people, "Fandomers" look down upon the "normal" people, "Fandom" means Western Media Fandom and specifically fanfiction, and that "non-Fandomers"/"normal" people get equated with "boring" or "superficial". Leaving aside my uncomfortableness with both sides stereotyping the other, I'm also wondering whether I'm the only one who has difficulties defining "Fandomer" or "being fannish" and drawing a consistently clear line between fannish and non-fannish. I'm just not in a position to put my vague feelings and bubbling-under-the-surface thoughts into words. (See subject line.)
  • [personal profile] yasaman: Foreign Territories
That's what a lot of American media can be like, to an immigrant girl: foreign territory. I've gotten used to it, and it takes things like the Racebending challenge or a show that blatantly excludes every part of my identity to recognize that there's an alternative, that there should be an alternative. I like wandering around foreign countries, but sometimes, you just want something more like home.
  • Feministe: The Shape of the Problem
What I wanted to talk about today is employment. I am currently unemployed, and have known very few trans people offline who weren’t in the same situation. It’s difficult to really get a true sense of the employment situation for trans people, since most studies are small, and few if any actually separate the sexes (which would give us a much clearer picture of who in our community is unemployed). But here’s what we can say for sure: compared to the general population, it’s really bloody awful.
