pinesandmaples: Remember me, Mississippi
Five years out, not everything is okay...but it's getting there. Knowing that people remember Mississippi and remember the lives lost in our state will go a long way towards being okay. We don't have the flashy parties or the awesome bars of New Orleans, but we do have a lot of our own to offer. There is a culture that shouldn't be lost in New Orleans; and there is a culture that shouldn't be lost in Mississippi, either. Even if CNN, NBC, ABC, and NPR haven't sent reporters to follow up on it. We'll be around. We've got a lot of life left yet.

- New Orleans: Then and Now
James O’Byrne and Doug MacCash retrace their steps through the post-katrina devastating, comparing the photos of flooded neighborhoods with photos of those neighborhoods today.
- Recovery of the Lower 9th Ward
The Lower 9th Ward was one of the neighborhoods in New Orleans most seriously devastated by Hurricane Katrina. As a largely working class, black neighborhood, it was also one of the slowest to recover. State disinvestment, residents low on resources, and unscrupulous insurance companies made for a tough time finding the funds to re-build.
dingsi: The "I wanted to disappear" meme, revisited: eating disorders from a trans angle
Trigger warning: this entry talks about disordered eating among trans people, people's reactions to ED topics, weight loss, and examples of body dysphoria. ETA: this also goes for comments. I will unscreen anonymous comments because I think the topic is important and I want people to be able to share their experiences, but regarding the subject matter there will be mention of self harm, suicidal thoughts and the like.
oursin: Just know how bad money can be
I don't know where this originated but I've been seeing various posts across my reading list alluding to someone apparently going on about The Poor spending money on stuff that's not totally necessary - rather than putting anything left over from the necessities into a savings account, presumably.
