LIST THREE (or more) THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF. They donโ€™t have to be your favorite things, just things that you think are good. Feel free to expand as much or as little as you want.

1. My hair, which has occasionally gotten the attention of complete strangers, and anything that gets someone's attention in New York City is something to be proud of.

2. My blood, which I donated again yesterday, and being O-, is too useful for me to keep all to myself.

3. My eyebrows, which I have no intention of thinning or threading, and think are charming and cute the way they are.

1) I have been planning out things to write for tokushipping week... and I think I actually wanna do art for one of the prompts?? I am not an artist so idk how it will go. But now I'm seriously thinking I should make a Tumblr just so I'll have somewhere to post it... ๐Ÿค” Is it a bad idea to join Tumblr in the year of our lord 2026? ๐Ÿ˜‚

2) Unrelatedly, I was listening through the Kamen Rider Zeztz soundtrack today and it's so good! I like that all the CODE-related tracks are jazzy ๐Ÿ˜‚ I love that there is even a track for the organ music from the wedding episode?? ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ I am mad, however, that Volume 1 of the soundtrack doesn't have Nox's transformation music from the most recent episode ๐Ÿ˜ญ I need that!

Panel Suggestions Open

If you have an idea for a Wiscon panel -- even a half-baked idea -- you can propose it here:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfvi7TCCIHg82rSpzrUKl8wX2SNMevlGP5HxOOnqa0pkrWu2w/viewform?usp=sharing&ouid=106072416256127446722

Seriously, even if your idea is just "We have to talk about Heated Rivalry!" it's okay to propose that. The Panels team will take all the input we get, and work to shape it into a proposed schedule.

If you'd like to talk your idea over before you suggest it, you can use the comments to this post, or start a new post in this group, or start a new post in your own space and maybe also point your readers here?

2. I have a web meeting at 5pm tonight but had enough time to come home between my previous meeting and this one, so I can take it from home and not be getting home at like seven.

Challenge #7

LIST THREE (or more) THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF. They donโ€™t have to be your favorite things, just things that you think are good. Feel free to expand as much or as little as you want.

+bursts out laughing+ Oh [community profile] snowflake_challenge, how did you know I needed this? I am someone who too often seeks the approval of others (and then is disappointed) when really, it's my own approval I should be striving for.

I am not sure I would have been able to do this challenge a mere two weeks ago due to bad depression/anxiety at the time, but I've got some new meds that are helping, and life is turning to the positive again. And thus:

1. I feel I'm a strong writer.

I mean general writing here - I still need practice on fiction, but heck, even my fiction is, I feel, decent! But yes, I'm always being told that I write well, and I believe it. I have a knack for writing journal entries that flow well, with good transitions from point to point.

Sometimes I do draft entries, but TBH most of mine are stream-of-consciousness so I guess my brain likes organizing material into sensible chunks. I do find myself going back to previous sections to expand on a point or tweak a sentence, but mostly, they're written from top to bottom.

2. I'm getting better at acknowledging and recognizing my achievements.

This is important! No, I'm not perfect. Yes, I still have a HECK of a lot I need to learn about people-ing and adulthood and life in general. But I've come so far in the last few years. I've consistently kept up streaming on Twitch for almost five years now. That kind of consistently showing up is unusual for me. I'm still damned proud I even STARTED streaming in the first place, let alone kept it going.

I've also been employed since September 2024. Okay, it's only part time. But folks, I hadn't worked for TWELVE YEARS due to anxiety and depression. I am damned proud of myself for (a) finding the job opening (b) applying to it (c) with a KICK-ASS cover letter (d) doing well enough in the phone interview to be offered the job (e) staying employed this long (f) and not only that, but to be singled out to work on new projects because of past performance. This is huge!

One of the things I'm also getting better on is reaching out. I just had an incident at work where I had a question about what to do on an assignment, and in the past I would have REALLY procrastinated from saying anything, but I asked with minimal hesitation. THAT IS ALSO HUGE FOR ME.

3. I love my creativity!

I've always been drawn to creativity. As a kid, I wanted to be a novelist, and I liked to draw (even though I wasn't that great at it). I tried various forms of being actively creative, but what finally stuck for me was the fiber arts. I'm slowing down with them and my output isn't what it used to be, but it still tickles me to read question threads on Ravelry, or cheer on my teammates in Nerdopolis.

I love that I'm fearless with knitting and crochet. I'll try any pattern that catches my eye, even if it's a new technique. I love that I've designed my own knitted and crocheted dolls. I was so proud of myself when I figured out how to get a doll's dress hem to stop flipping up! And PLEATS! I've knitted box pleats! Probably never again, they are a pain, but I've DONE it.... in a pattern of my own design, having never done pleats before. Fearless? YUP!

I might have more to add to this, but for now, this is good. :)

It was cold but sunny and there were birds! First bird we heard was a Varied Thrush, and we saw eight species of Sparrow, including Fox and White-throated, before we'd started up our trails. They were in an area that's often been excellent Sparrow territory, but not this year til now. And the California Quail! A covey of ten has been in that area for weeks now, and they're remarkably tolerant of people. They flew out of the poison oak right in front of us, and while they vanished back into the brush several times, they'd soon return. They are so cute! I started up Lower Packrat but turned back at the big mud puddle; should be dry enough to pass next week. At Jewel Lake the Great Egret seems to be hunting there regularly, the trees were full of Lesser Goldfinches, and the local Song Sparrows are clearly hopped up on hormones.:) The list: )

We encountered two separate flocks of Golden-crowned Sparrows as we rarely have this season, and several Fox Sparrows. A good morning.

My sister and I sat down together to watch the 1st episode of the second season of Patience - autistic criminal records clerk helps the murder team in York catch criminals. Neither of us had watched the first season.

Not bad, the autism seems mostly well handled - the self-help group seemed designed for humour though. The plot had perhaps a little too much reliance on weird science - revolving around someone with Rh-Null blood caught up in fringe medical stuff, though the vampirism red-herring was nicely handled. The second episode has infrasound as a murder weapon, and probably overplayed hyperacusis as a superpower, though it did also spend a lot of time showing how much of a problem it is for Patience.

But immediately the first episode finished, my sister turned to me and exclaimed: "She's exactly like you!"

I didn't answer that until the next day, because I was completely freaked out by how exactly like me she is.

I barely slept on Sunday night - maybe about 3 hours in total? - so I called out yesterday and went back to bed. I felt better but not great upon waking again after actually sleeping for another 2 hours, and spent most of the day zoned out on the couch, looking at tumblr. Last night I slept hard and today I woke up feeling much better, but ugh, sleep should not be so hard!

I know it's just January and winter but I can feel myself withdrawing and hermiting up, so if I'm late in responses to comments, that's why - it's definitely not you, it's me.

If you want to see Emor at its best, visit its City Court in session.

Actually, if you are staying with an Emorian acquaintance, it's unlikely you'll be given any choice about this. Emorians assume that everyone in the world is as enthralled with their laws as they are. Thankfully, Emorians are right to be proud of their law system, founded centuries ago by their Chara and council. This law system, known simply as the Chara's law, is one of the bulwarks of civilization in the Three Lands.

The best way to visit a law court is to prepare yourself beforehand by listening to an Emorian explain their law system to you. Any Emorian will do; even Emorian ditch-diggers know a good deal about the law. Indeed, even Emorian women do.

The City Court is not terribly formal, by Emorian standards, and the rules for behavior will be explained to you beforehand by the guards at its door. Wear your best clothes and be on your best behavior; otherwise, you can relax and enjoy the spectacle.

On your way out, be sure to visit the adjoining Law Academy, founded by the City Court in order to give advanced lessons in the law. The Academy does not try to compete with the traditional Emorian methods of learning law: tutoring, apprenticeships, and playing law-based games when one is a boy. Rather, the Academy provides supplemental education for Emorians who plan to apply for high positions in the law, such as at the palace. Most of the Academy students are between the ages of eight and sixteen, though students as young as four are accepted, if they plan to apply for a youth post, such as scribing or paging. On the other end of the scale, a few students are full-grown men who, because of unfortunate circumstances, missed out on the normal training in the law that virtually all Emorian boys receive. In recent years, many of these students have been former slaves. The Academy welcomes them all, even going so far as to pay the fees of any students whose slave service left them penniless.

[Translator's note: Emorians' obsession with the law is on full display in Law Links.]

I have just been pleasantly surprised by a health insurance company: they aren't requiring "prior authorization" for my Kesimpta prescription. The person I spoke to this afternoon checked whether I had any of the drug left (no), and whether I'd missed a dose, before arranging delivery for Thursday morning. This is the drug whose copay will meet the 2026 out-of-pocket maximum. Yes, I selected a plan in large part based on the prescription drug coverage.
