You mentioned bandom! ♥_♥ (Auriel started life as a fic, and every fandom I've passed through since then has had its impact.)
I can write reliable character POV, but I feel like I can't make it as interesting as unreliable character POV. I also wind up gravitating toward the issues where the reliable character becomes unreliable.
On the other hand, I have had characters become too unreliable to handle. When I can't come up with a unifying theory of $character, I wind up splitting them into two POV characters, or sidelining them as non-POV characters. (Marcus and Gwyneira are the results of a character split. There's also a third non-POV character who came out of the same original concept.)
With Auriel, I have the option of character splits. In fanfic (were I actually capable of writing it), I don't think I could do things like that. So I probably wouldn't be able to write Pete, because I have no unifying theory of Pete Wentz. I'm not even sure I could write someone with a fairly consistent public face and reliable characterization.
... hang on. That is probably the reason I can't write fic. I can't quite integrate everything into a unifying theory; I can't make the characters work right enough in my head to write them.
