sofiaviolet: Lyn-Z and Kitty of Mindless Self Indulgence (girlcrush)

Let me talk about clothes for a minute! )

Daily Song (right-click): Mindless Self Indulgence - Shut Me Up
Okay, at this point, it's looking like Daily Song will be a tour of my 25 most-played songs. So here's number three. I listened to this whole album a lot during my first year of college. (Relevant icon is relevant.)

And here are the links I had kicking around my Dreamwidth section of TooManyTabs (actual, organized link roundup soon, I hope):

[personal profile] charmian: recent LJ controversies, Three Weeks for DW and Active comms? And, is growth a problem? (maybe not)

[personal profile] holyschist: A totally non-scientific poll about blogging focus and Dreamwidth

[personal profile] heartequals: "How does one go about changing their internet name? People's internet names are so fascinating to me."

Ellie is watching Top Gear and laughing so hard it sounds like she's weeping in agony over her linear systems final.

Daily Song (right-click): Jack Off Jill - When I Am Queen
One of the first songs I put on the Gwyneira playlist (Gwyneira being one of my characters - she lives in the foreground of my brainchatter and likes to accompany me when I go shopping. She also has the dubious distinction of having been resurrected from suicide by the professor in charge of her floor at Argent University. Number of people who know she was actually dead: 3. Number of people who were in the room when she came back: 3. Number of people who live with her who know this stuff: 0.)

Link roundup will be delayed. I am writing the essay for my honors seminar, the one on mental illness in popular culture, and it is prodding at the epic 'meh, fuck it, idunwanna' that characterizes my depression. Meaning the essay is going so slowly omfg. (Current plan: write essay until I can no longer think. Set alarm and go to sleep. Finish essay tomorrow. Go to campus, print essay and hand off to professor. Come home and email essay to classmates, as they requested in class.)

I can also post the paper, or excerpts, if any of you would like to read about the differences in portrayal of mental illness between The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath's journals, and a biography called Rough Magic.

oh make me over

In my enthusiasm for this whole enterprise, I'll be continuing the daily link roundups. I never thought I'd be that kind of blogger, but I seem to have developed the habit, even before I was doing a specific kind of link-gathering. But while link-collecting is a useful service, I also want to be making other posts, especially in the context of [community profile] three_weeks_for_dw.

One thing I'd like to do is provide a new song every day!

Daily Song (right-click): Hole - Celebrity Skin
Within the first week this song was on my ipod, it went straight to the top of the most-played list. It remains in the number one spot, with almost three times as many plays as the next song down.

[personal profile] blnchflr has asked me to write about unreliable narrators, although this will take a few days. (I shake my fist at the end of the semester.) I am still accepting prompts, questions, et cetera, via comment/pm/email/carrier pigeon.

Three Weeks for Dreamwidth: prep post

1. [community profile] three_weeks_for_dw starts tomorrow! The Latest Things page is already full of people planning their participation, and will be a great place to look for cool stuff over the next three weeks.

2. If you are going to participate, be sure to tag your posts three weeks for dreamwidth or threeweeks so they show up on the special Latest Things page.

3. I would like to post something every day; what kinds of posts would you like to see? Ask questions, give prompts, etc. Quoting from [personal profile] synecdochic, What kind of topics/entries would you like to see me posting about? Any particular questions you've always wanted to ask me but have resisted because the answer would be a huge essay? Ever want to wind me up and watch me go on a particular topic? Anything you've heard me say "I should write that entry about $foo I've been meaning to write" and have been patiently waiting for?

4. There's also this meme, which has popped up again: Everyone has things they blog about. Everyone has things they don't blog about. Challenge me out of my comfort zone by telling me something I don't blog about, but you'd like to hear about, and I'll write a post about it. Ask for anything: latest movie watched, last book read, political leanings, thoughts on alfalfa, favorite type of underwear, graphic techniques, etc.

5. If I have you friended on LJ, please fill out this poll or comment here to let me know how you prefer to follow me.

1. If there are things you want to know about me, ask them! I will compile an answers post soon (either after the last paper of the semester is done, or when I need a break from actually working on it).

2. The location of the LJ affiliate script has changed. Since the script messes up ctrl-click/right-click, [personal profile] jonquil suggests two fixes. [personal profile] xenacryst explains the security issue with giving up control over one's outbound links.

3. Closet cleaning challenge in [community profile] homeeconomics101. I got started with this a couple of weeks ago, but it kind of fizzled. I have a bunch of stuff to get rid of, and I still have to go through half my closet and both my dressers (yes, both. Shut up, I have a lot of clothes.)

4. Apparently, I am attending a Priscilla, Queen of the Desert party tonight.

long-ass post is long

Took my final for Soviet Secret Police today. I think I did well - there was one "identify this document excerpt" that I swear I had never seen before, but it was a small part of the test.

I foresee using this icon a lot while I'm in New Orleans this summer, and I need to upload one of the "emphasizin ur POC" icons as well.

I have missed my one-year anniversary on Dreamwidth. But it was because I had papers to write, so I will just commemorate it now.

currently wearing: that t-shirt

The one in my icon (IDK if I still have it uploaded on LJ). Even though the panic is over.

Papers done, printed, gone through TurnItIn. Just have to deliver physical copies to the TAs, which I will do after this class.

Of course, after that, I have to go to student health! Because I missed my appointment an hour ago! Because I was so busy freaking out about my papers that I forgot it. So, once again, fml. At least this round of "oh, self, fail" is minor and easily fixed.

And then I'll go to work, because I had to cancel this morning because papers.

for purposes of this class, my icon should probably say sociology

Since I'm awake a whole hour earlier than planned, I figure I have time to give you guys another update on my academic progress over here!

The text of the KGB paper is done, and so are most of the footnotes. I need to finish the citations from Wilderness of Mirrors and give it one more read-through for suck and typos.

The text of the sociology paper is mostly done. I need to do its citations, and to keep adding stuff to the later paragraphs - I analyzed 8 photos of women from tumblrs I'm following, and each of those many photos is shorter than the last. I can probably accomplish most of that through actually comparing the photos to each other; currently each paragraph analyzes a single image.

fml

*breathes into paper bag*

So the paper for my sociology class is due tomorrow, right? It's not a long paper, and I find all that stuff really easy to talk about (thanks, feminist blogosphere!). Easy.

And the paper for Contemporary Africa is already done; even easier.

The big long paper for the honors seminar isn't due until the 28th, so it's okay. I have time.

And then the paper for Soviet Secret Police... is not actually due Friday, like I thought. The final is on Friday, but the paper is actually due tomorrow.

Which I discovered only last night, at 1:30, during an inbox-cleaning spree. I opened an email from the TA to see if I could archive it or if I had to wait until I was done with the class, and. Shit, I know I read it when it came in, but somehow the actual contents didn't stick with me.

:( fml, guys.

(I will be AFK until tomorrow at 3, or until both papers are done, whichever comes first.)

If you used the opt-out I linked yesterday, you might want to go back and do it again. Turns out it's set opt_exclude_stats 1.

Roller derby: awesome! We had to learn the rules and scoring practices through osmosis (and really could not hear the commentators well at all). We also ate some fried dough (truth in advertising!), which was basically a large flat beignet. Nomnomnom.

This morning, we went to the Flea at MIT. The original plan was for me to take the train; Ellie was driving but she had already promised every possible seat in her car to people from Wireless Club. But two cancellations later, I had a ride, yay.

Here are pictures of the things I got! Since I, uh, don't know what some of these doodads are called.
Not that it matters that much. I'm just going to wrap them in wire anyway. )

Related to Dreamwidth swag, [personal profile] damned_colonial explains how to get different colors and styles of t-shirt on Zazzle. Can be generalized to the rest of Zazzle, including other, non-clothing products.

[personal profile] rydra_wong: LJ is again tampering with your links to insert its own affiliate codes. This is the opt-out from the last round of affiliate-link shenanigans, and it seems to still work.

On today's agenda: roller derby! Ellie and I are stopping at some woodworking store on the way. Her tools already equal or exceed the value of her car, but she still doesn't have everything she needs. (In addition to set-building/theater tech and fine furniture, she plans to move into the woods one day and build her own house, and take a whole bunch of her friends who want lots of big dogs/unrestricted nudity/etc. with her.)

At some point, Ellie is going to build me a new garment rack. I had a mass-produced plastic/metal one, but it broke under the weight of my clothes. The new one will be made of two-by-fours and an oak dowel.

[site community profile] dw_mobile has been created for the project team working on the mobile version of the site. See also [site community profile] dw_biz for the brainstorming post.

[personal profile] azurelunatic is running an Emergency Fic Drive to keep [staff profile] denise occupied while she is prevented from typing by a hand injury.

Did my taxes at the last minute. I will probably wind up using most of my return to help Ellie pay our renters' insurance.

*has a five-day weekend* I have spent today doing nothing productive whatsoever. I think this might be related to my inability to remember my meds over the past few days. /o\

ETA: tumblr's Dashboard is pretty awesome, actually. I had been following tumblrs-as-feeds on my dreamroll, but I'm going to unsubscribe from all of them on Dreamwidth in favor of my Dashboard. Makes my dreamroll a bit more SFW and a bit less overwhelming.

I've been largely offline for a few days. /o\ I am catching up as fast as I can, but seeing as I had to go back to ?show=P&ship=220 on Dreamwidth, I'm expecting it to take a while to catch up on DW comms and feeds, and on LJ.

Ellie received a box of saws from Dad (which belonged to Mom's father back in the day), and she is now using their markings and handles to identify them; apparently pre-war saws are much better than post-war saws, and she wants to know if she's got the really good stuff. IDEK.

Went to the mall yesterday, wheee. I felt the need to get out of the house, and Mom had sent me some money for Easter.

Acquired:
* belts! I want my pants to stay up.
* socks! Because I like them to match my shirt.
* comfy office-casual and office-super-casual tops!
* sequin-covered mini dress! Because I felt horrifically under-dressed at the Slutcracker cast party and foresee other events like it in my future.

Today, I have been cleaning out my closet. Sofia's rules of closet-cleaning:
1. If it doesn't fit, it goes. You have not changed sizes for several years now, and no matter how many mozzarella sticks you eat, you will probably not gain weight. Likewise, if it didn't fit over your hipbones when it showed up in the mail, it will not magically do so in the future.
2. If you have a lot of the same type of thing, you should pare down the collection. No one needs that many jackets.
3. If you try it on and then lol at yourself in the mirror, it needs to go.

Results: one-quarter of closet and some random stuff hanging around = one hamper's worth of discards. \o/

As far as [community profile] napowrimo goes, I'm doing all right. I managed to write yesterday and today, but only late in the day ("oh shit, gotta do my poem"), and they're essentially remixes of older poems I've written.

I definitely have a huge problem with consistently being able to write poetry. Sometimes I get into the groove (usually coinciding with poetry-writing courses or segments of courses, which is convenient and suggests it's more about habit than some kind of cyclical inspiration thing).

I haven't done much Auriel stuff lately, either. I haven't worked on the Big Damn Map for a week or so, and I haven't been writing for *cough* way too long. Ugh ugh ugh. Poking through my journal from mid-2007 to whenever I started the next one, I've found some little tidbits that might prove inspiring, tucked away amongst bandom squeeing and notes from Italian class. Because I'll take that kick in the pants now, even if it fucks with my ability to write poetry this month.

Bleh. On that note, to bed with me.
