I really need a new coat, and other things.

I have a black wool coat whose lining is disintegrating. (Mom did fix it up for me last Christmas, but it is pretty much beyond repair by now.) So what I need, more specifically, is a black wool coat which is large enough to accommodate some sweaters/hoodies under it.

It's black! And wool! And, going by the measurements the seller gave, would fit me perfectly, with room for maybe a single relatively thin sweater under it.

I was outbid at the very last second, so I suppose it doesn't matter. To console myself, I bought this locket instead.

Time for another edition of Buy This So I Won't! )

And some things I have purchased... )

Relevant to interests of Boston locals, Dreamwidth users, and Boston locals again.

[personal profile] shadesong/[livejournal.com profile] shadesong is looking for people to make t-shirts for the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center's Clothesline Project.

She says:
The Clothesline Project is for survivors of rape, sexual assault, incest, domestic violence, any kind of sexual violence, but can also be for loved ones of survivors; there are shirts by parents, partners, and friends of survivors. (Note: I am hoping for shirts from male survivors and anyone else whose experience challenges people's assumptions of "the typical rape victim", but I will take any shirt you want to make.)
This shirt-making event will take place at Shadesong's house at a time to be determined. They're also looking into ways for non-local survivors to contribute.

[staff profile] mark did a code push last night. Things that are live include a fix for removing users from subscription filters (basically, It Works Now) and [personal profile] yvi's sticky entry patch. To set a sticky post, you can choose any existing post and enter its URL or ID at the bottom of the Display settings page. Crossposting from clients should now work, although I haven't mucked around with it since I don't use a client. There are also a bunch of new themes.

Johnny Blazes will be performing Wo(n)man Show at Northeastern tonight. But Ellie isn't coming, because work. You should come and hang out with me, though! Email me if you are coming and we can meet up. Doors at 7:30, show at 8.

Ow ow ow.

Damn you, body! I had oodles of plans this weekend! )

Why does the right side of my body hurt more than the left side??? Headache is on right side, sinus pressure on right side, cramps are worse on right side - okay, I typed that and the cramps migrated to the left really fucking fast. IDEK.

Ow my toes.

So I wore my really light grey pants yesterday, and with them my awesome spectator flats.

On a normal day, that would have been fine. Yesterday was not a normal day.

I walked from the library to the bus stop, from Kenmore to Newbury Street (I got socks at Urban Outfitters! and other stuff, but not a coat, which is what I was looking for), and from Newbury Street back to campus. About a mile or so total, based on googlemaps estimates.

After the queermosexual club meeting, a large group of us walked from campus to Berryline (a little under a mile, I'd guess, seeing as we walked through the Fens).

I have blisters on my toes now. >:(

I have been going around and adding people on Dreamwidth - people I've seen around in various contexts (generally either fandom or irc). So if you're wondering where I came from: there is your answer.

***

Today at work I dusted some display cases. Well, one and a half, because I only had half an hour at the end of the day, and they were really dirty. I am still suffering the respiratory effects. When I sneeze, my snot is grey. :\

In case you haven't already seen a post about this...

LJ was hit by some malicious flash.

People who have analyzed the malicious code say that it just harvests your email address for spam purposes and replicates itself, but you may wish to expire all your LJ sessions to be safe.

Please check the most recent few entries on your LJ. The exploit replicates itself by inserting code into a recent entry by each user who views it while logged in, making the affected post(s) public if they weren't already.

If you find an infected post, you'll want to edit it to:
* restore its security setting (infected posts are changed to public),
* restore its metadata (the exploit deletes current music/mood/location and uses the default icon),
* remove the malicious code.

Goats belong outside?

Writing this up for [personal profile] azurelunatic and [personal profile] zarhooie, but probably great lulz for everyone else, too.

My mother lived off-campus her senior year of undergrad. The people in the apartment downstairs were a group of male college students.

One day, they decided to cook a whole goat on a spit. Over charcoal. Inside their apartment.

To be fair to those dudes, they did have the front door open. And they were originally from a country whose houses were constructed such that whole goats could be roasted over coals indoors. They just failed to consider the differences in architecture, and the existence of their upstairs neighbors.

Mom and her roommate were able to convince them to move the whole operation outside, thus averting carbon monoxide problems all around. \o?

(Other stories from my mom: no matter how hard I try, I will never be as terrible at cooking as her roommate who tried to boil oil and who tried to put buns in the oven still in their plastic bag.)

meme

from [livejournal.com profile] thelemic

My username is [personal profile] sofiaviolet.

My journal name is Sofia Violet Emilie Blackthorne. I picked out my own name - a combination of not having ever liked what my parents named me and long-term immersion in pseudonymous cultures. I was originally planning to keep my middle name, but Sofia Emilie does not flow.

My journal title is "picked a handful of violets in my name," which comes from a poem I started but haven't finished. It's about lesbians. // My journal title is "The Love Letter Sessions," which was the title of a poem I wrote in high school. It was about lesbians.

My journal subtitle is "right between the scapulae, back of the heart," which is from another poem I wrote. The first assignment for my spring 2009 poetry workshop was to answer the question "What is poetry?" // My journal subtitle is "a life you don't despise." I think it's a lyric, but I ran into it out of context, as someone else's journal title or subtitle.

My reading page is "relevant to my interests." Because it's true. // My friends page is "Friends or Enemies," because of that website.

My default userpic is a little drawing of violets I turned up in a google image search.

Three of them I can wear to work. The other is sort of borderline. I mean, I work in a casual environment with chill people, but zombies are probably pushing it.

HEY MOM HEY MOM HEY MOM

Did you get an email?? (Note to anyone reading this who isn't my mom: she's been having issues staying logged in, thereby potentially missing locked posts, so we tried to set up a notification that'll email her whenever I post.)

EDIT: Just logged into the parental account (yes I know their password, shut up) and the notification wasn't set up. So I went ahead and did that. /o\ Note to Mom: it should work from now on.

[personal profile] foxfirefey has written a Greasemonkey script that allows you to collapse and expand entries on your DW reading page (provided you use a core2 layout).

And my suggested feature got migrated to Bugzilla! And [personal profile] yvi is working on getting it implemented.

Someday, I'm going to make myself a riot prrl icon. Though I should probably wait until I've done at least a few of the exercises from the perl-for-n00bs book I got, or submitted a patch. Or something.

Work is work. FYI, a digital collection of 80+ pdfs takes a really long time to build. Which wouldn't be so bad except that I now "build early, build often" so that Greenstone doesn't eat my work again.

We had no researchers today, but we did have 197381338482892 freshmen come in looking for classrooms. Lol n00bs, although I suppose I should give them credit for figuring out where their classes are before classes actually start. (I bet we get a ton of lost freshmen tomorrow [first day of classes], a few on Thursday, and somewhere-in-the-middle on Friday [for Tuesday/Friday classes].)

I got home from work yesterday, took a nap, and woke up around 8:30 this morning. Oops.

Dreamwidth is moving servers. They've specified a 4-hour window in which downtime might occur but are expecting just half an hour of actual downtime. @dreamwidth is the offsite status page.

I have not upgraded to Snow Leopard yet, because I didn't order it until Friday morning. (I should have just hauled myself to the Apple store and bought it in person.)

My apologies if you're having issues with the color contrast on my journal at the moment. It's a) only halfway switched to new colors and b) seems to be using the wrong properties in certain places. Will fix this evening.

Edit: colors should be better now. Poke me if text isn't showing up well on its background.

I need a more specific icon for these shenanigans.

I got a Dreamhack and I stayed up until one in the morning reading an intro-to-perl site and I think I'm going to try to code some shit this weekend.

I'm not going to assign myself a bug yet, I don't think - I'd rather put in a little time seeing if it's something I can actually do, and then claiming the bug. If someone else gets to it in the meantime, oh well. I'll have learned something. (And really, if it's taking me that long to figure out what needs to be done, that might be a sign it's above my n00b-skills.)

Which means I have tonight and tomorrow night to poke at my layout. I made a chart of accessible color combos and will be slotting them into place (since some of my links/text are insufficiently contrast-y), and there's something I want to see if I can do (will post how-to if it works).

Now, off to acquire free ice cream from my school, and dinner from Popeyes. :D

Quick post before I leave for work.

Relatedly, I need to find some time to bring my laptop to the Apple store. The comma key isn't working properly (I have to bang really hard to get it to type the necessary character), which makes it hard to do anything requiring angle brackets, either. Or any wordcount-boosting writing.

I think prying off the key cover and cleaning under it would fix the problem, but I don't want to do it myself, since last time I tried that, I couldn't get the cover back on and had to bring it in anyway.

I'm not even surprised.

Shopping from FBR's webstore seems likely to compromise your credit card info. :\

I don't think that's what happened with mine,* since the last time I bought anything from FBR was probably the pre-order for Viva La Cobra.

* A couple of weeks ago, I got a letter with a new debit card in it, informing me that there had been a security breach at some third party and they were issuing a new card just in case. (I was very annoyed at the time, but I've already got the new number memorized, so no big deal.)

I think I must be a real grown-up, you guys. I haven't lost my keys since freshman year (and I only misplaced it in my dorm room), I haven't lost my cell phone ever, and I still have my school id issued in 2006. :D?
