Ooh.

Awesome: The Black Parade Mary-Sue Art Meme, hosted by [livejournal.com profile] theopteryx.

I have a half-completed painting that I will finish in the next couple of days. The final version will be posted on the meme and in my journal, of course, but I have taken some in-progress pictures and I might post them too.

Other news: I got my randomized-text code working in my Dreamwidth layout. Left sidebar, down below the little pink rose. :) Only works for account levels with access to advanced customization/layers, though. I've typed up a tutorial for it, but I want to sleep on it in case my directions suck or something.

Invite codes and other DW miscellany.

Two one zero codes available today! The invite code system demands that I give it an email address for you - contact sofiaviolet@sofiaviolet.com if you don't feel comfortable leaving your email in a public comment. And yes, anonymous and OpenID comments are on.

You could also check out [personal profile] hatman's New Account Fairy post in [profile] dw_rocks, [personal profile] paidaccountfairy, or [site community profile] dw_codesharing.

I'm going to try doing a bit of support - I helped out at random on LJ's support boards for a while, so I'm not completely clueless, but I'm definitely not an expert.

Tangentially, I had to teach my mother what a cut tag does last night, via telephone. *facepalm* I thought she knew! Hopefully she hasn't missed out on too much of my content since she started reading my journal.

Good morning, internets.

If you had an OpenID on Dreamwidth but have deleted it, that was probably a bad idea. Go undelete it so you can manage imported comments.

I agonized over it for a while, but now I have a seed account. I'll be playing paid account fairy with my friends in the near future.

Now I should eat some lunch.

Bandom post.

Fall Out Boy show last night was good. So glad I ran into [livejournal.com profile] insunshine, [livejournal.com profile] gigantic and [livejournal.com profile] 1001cranes.

Hey Monday were all right. I like Cassadee's voice, but only when she's singing. Metro Station were fun. I thought their setup was kind of weird. All Time Low were all right musically, but all signs point to them being douchebags, so no. Cobra Starship were tons of fun, as always, but Gabe really needs to stop touring for a while and take care of his voice, dammit. Fall Out Boy were pretty good, and they played a nice set. The screens kind of confused me, but I guess it's better than the fucking wall of fire they had last time I saw them (I was surprised that Andy didn't melt on that tour, tbh).

Just glanced at a picture of this guy I went to school with in New Orleans (ah, facebook, how useful you are), and he looks kind of a lot like Joe. Heh.

Next time I go snail-collecting, I'm bringing a bucket.

It's tempting to leave you with no context for that subject. But not that tempting.

I first noticed the lovely snails in Jamaica Plain when I moved into this apartment last August. They get very large, and their shells are all sorts of pretty shades of brown. But all I've done so far is try not to step on them.

I was coming home from work today and noticed a couple of empty shells on the sidewalk, just under the overhang of the front hedge. Hm, I thought, and picked them up. I could make something with these.

I went back outside to see if I could find more empty snail shells, and I did. The area where the hedge encroaches on the sidewalk seems to be some kind of snail graveyard. (The neighbors' kids had a lot of fun staring at me as I poked the accumulated leaf/dirt/snail debris with a stick).

Eventually I wound up with a little pile that was just a smidge more than a handful. I'll need to clean them somehow (and I suspect some will not survive that step) because they're covered in leaf bits and dirt, and some of them still have dried snail-snot in them.

Today's haul. )

And how was your day?

On Dreamwidth, and how to get an account.

Shiny factoid you might not have known: if you sign into Dreamwidth using your OpenID, then set and verify your email address, you'll get an invite code on the 30th. You can then use it yourself to make an account, or forward the invite email to someone else for their use.

Signing in with your OpenID will also allow you to test out most of Dreamwidth's features (though not posting, crossposting, or importing, sorry), which can help you decide what you want to do with your invite.

[site community profile] dw_codesharing will become active around open beta and could be another good place to get a code.

I will also have some invites to hand out come the 30th, but I have no clue how many.

***

I will continue to crosspost to LJ, with comments redirected to Dreamwidth.

So far I have been granting access and subscribing liberally; I expect my reading and access lists to shrink once I get some time to evaluate them. I also expect to put access filters into place eventually. I do not plan to use reading filters (though I'm pretty sure they're not available yet), ever.

I am making an effort to post publicly whenever possible, so that I don't need to concern myself too much with access or filters.

I am enjoying my Friday.

I love my job. :D Just throwing that out there.

My alarm clock might not be broken after all. *stares at it suspiciously* I'll test it out tomorrow. And speaking of broken stuff, I really hope my mom replaces the CD player in her car before I come home. I want to give her lots of music for her commute! And listen to it with her while we drive to the mall/French Quarter/Magazine Street/grocery store/Elmwood/Taqueria Corona/Five Happiness/assorted delicious New Orleans restaurants.

music for my mom (also taking suggestions lol)
• Leathermouth
• Fall Out Boy (Folie A Deux, since she has their other albums already)
• Thursday

I am about 4000 words behind on my writing, but I feel pretty okay about it. Because writing is important, but so is having a life where I run into people I know and hang out with friends and leave my apartment. Besides, this weekend is looking quiet, so I can catch up some. And really, what's 4k, in the grand scheme of 410k?

As I try to keep myself in the swing of updating often...

... and using subject lines:

1. Today is my mother's birthday.

2. I need to buy a new alarm clock. I somehow managed to break mine. :( I didn't even have it for more than a couple of months.

3. I am looking for podfic recs! I often have the opportunity to listen to my ipod at work, but I spend too much time fiddling with it whenever it plays a song I don't like, and I suck at playlists. But today I listened to [livejournal.com profile] inkjunket's reading of [livejournal.com profile] sevenfists's The Sky-High City and it was awesome. Just what I needed.

So, yes. Ur podfics, give them to me. Bandom preferred, but feel free to take this as an opportunity to recruit me into your fandom via ficcy goodness.

4. How much do I love Firefox's search capabilities? I found the links in #3 so quickly in my bookmarks/history.

5. I really need to import/upload/redo my tags and icons. But I need to catch up on writing even more.

Significantly easier customization, yay!

I've put in several hours hacking the shit out of my layout, and I've been pretty happy with the results.

But there are a few things that are still broken, either because I haven't worked on them yet, or because I can't figure out how to fix them.

1. I want the entire month to show up on my entries, not the three-letter abbreviated version. I also want full days of the week. "Monday, April 20th, 2009" instead of "Apr. 20th, 2009."

2. The spacing on the stuff under my userpic is messed up. Plus I want to make new images.

3. The links, tags, and page summary all have more space around them than I want.

4. I want to fiddle with the lavender box at the bottom of the post. It takes up too much space.

5. I would prefer that tags on entries be comma-separated or split into two or more columns. The single column format looks bad with more than a couple of tags.

6. The text marking mood/music/location doesn't seem to want to be modified in any way.

7. Greater visual difference between my name and the link to my site (to the left, under the userpic).

8. I'm going to give up my randomized background images, but I want to make my random song lyrics work. (For examples, go and refresh my LJ a couple of times.)

First entry on Dreamwidth.

It's been a pretty busy few days...

Stuff for making jewelry arrived Friday morning, but the gold and silver colored wire doesn't match the plated findings, so I have to send it back and invest in gold-filled and sterling wire. Friday night, I partied with my classmates from the poetry workshop. Saturday and Sunday were the Skillshare.

Friday: Symposium )

I staggered through the door around three in the morning and woke up pretty late on Saturday.

Saturday: Skillshare day 1 )

I chatted with my parents for a little while, then nabbed some Popeyes and went home.

Sunday: Skillshare day 2 )

I went home a little after ten and managed to get lost on my way back to Shawmut, so I called my parents and had them read directions to me over the phone. When I got home, I finished my work for my sociology class, then checked my email and found a Dreamwidth invite code.

And here I am.

The end of the semester has been kicking my ass.

Plus there was [livejournal.com profile] muskratjamboree and a sinus infection in there. I will be getting caught up with all of you over the weekend. If there's anything you really want me to see, you can link it in the comments to make sure.

MJ09: Awesome. I love fandom.

Sinus infection: I can has antibiotics, and I'm already on the mend.

I am officially done with my art class as of this morning, and my poetry workshop as of Tuesday (though we have one last unofficial meeting tomorrow night at Ian's apartment). That leaves one more assignment for my sociology class, and the take-home final for Women In Western Religions - neither of which will be difficult.

Then I'll have a few weeks to do nothing much. I'll keep volunteering at Dress For Success, and I might be working a little, but other than that... I'm expecting a nice big box of shiny stuff in the mail tomorrow or Saturday, so I can make jewelry again. :D And I can paint.

Speaking of... I posted this a long time ago, but the offer is still open, if you want me to send you a crafty-thing. [livejournal.com profile] in_sunshine, I am plotting what yours will be.

If anyone has a spare Dreamwidth code kicking around, I am looking for one. If not, or if you have it earmarked for another person, I will just wait until I can buy myself an account. At any rate, tell me your username over there, if you have one!

two shows I went to and two I didn't )

Also, guess what? I am probably going to take the amateur radio licensing test along with [livejournal.com profile] zachens and the rest of Wireless Club. [livejournal.com profile] zachens wants to ride in the Bikes Not Bombs thing in June, but also wanted to coordinate water stations and such - so I will be coating myself in spf 70 and taking over the latter part of that sentence.

That's on June 7th, and I got myself a ticket to see Taking Back Sunday on the 27th. So I will go back to New Orleans some time in between.

wtf

I am only online right now through the grace of UPS.

The power went out at my apartment. [livejournal.com profile] zachens has confirmed that the neighbors one house up the street are also without electricity.

NStar has been called. They didn't know what was wrong but they did give me an automated callback. My power should return by 10:30.

The weird thing it, the power isn't 100% totally and completely dead.
* [livejournal.com profile] zachens dragged out the voltmeter and the outlets are all putting out ~9 volts.
* The GFCI near the kitchen sink was buzzing for long enough that we called Dad. It stopped, though, while I was on the phone with him.
* The motion-detector and light in the front hall of this building work.
* The light in our front room works, but the outlets don't power anything.
* The light in [livejournal.com profile] zachens's room works, but the outlets don't power anything.
* The ceiling light and fan in the bathroom works, but not the GFCI or the lights over the mirror.
* The refrigerator is running. Light comes on and everything. Pantry light is out, though.
* Some basement lights work, but others don't. The dryer works.

Current theories include: electricity is one fucked up force of energy; we have a poltergeist; the house is possessed. Two of those would require judicious application of Winchesters. Other theories are, of course, welcomed.

Yes, [livejournal.com profile] zachens has already twiddled with the circuit breakers. Twice.

EDIT: All lights in apartment (so, front room and [livejournal.com profile] zachens's room, then) have gone out. Afraid to check elsewhere. Also heard a high-pitched beep. IDEK.

EDIT 2: [livejournal.com profile] zachens is listening to "Danger! High Voltage" during the power outage.

EDIT 3: \o/ The electricity! It returns!

writing: teal deer

I need to write an outline. It's getting to the point where I need one desperately. The pieces I'm writing are starting to not fit together, because I don't have a strong enough goal to write towards.

Who am I kidding? They haven't been fitting together for about a year now. Ever since I decided to see what would happen if I had the characters meet in a different way.

I have a lot more than two openings now, and I need to figure out what to do with them all. Some of them contain material that can be reworked for later scenes, at least.

I also need to figure out what I want to write next. Because it's not like I'm going to finish the current story any time soon, but. I'm a lot closer to "done" than I ever have been before.

Some time this week, I need to email myself all the relevant files and print everything out. I don't have enough screen real estate to deal with two or three documents at once.

And I need a title. Fuck.

taking on new projects

That's apparently what I do when I take my meds regularly.

First project may never be posted, although I am writing it out as an LJ post. I feel like I don't have anything fresh to say about big picture issues relating to Racefail 09 (I have been following it via [livejournal.com profile] metafandom), so I'm trying to analyze things I can do. And since I have seen a number of entries about what people can do in their real lives, I decided to focus on how I am going to try and fail less at tackling issues of race in my writing.

But as that is long, self-indulgent, and still unfinished, I may never actually post it - so don't hold your breath or anything. But do go and read some other people's posts.

Second project is a personal undertaking, though it was sparked by the fact that I'm currently sitting in the NUBiLaGA resource room. I thought I'd make up a little list of all the LGBTQ&c collections we have in the archives, and distribute it to NUBiLaGA members for their edification. I figure it's a little better than just pointing them straight at the archives website, and all the links will go directly to the appropriate finding aids.

Sorry about not posting a picture of my awesome outfit from yesterday. I came home and took a nap instead. Maybe you will get pictures of the articles of clothing, without me in them.

Well, shit.

I haven't been getting friends-only entries for god knows how long. Apparently either my reader or LJ "fixed" something and now authentication is just... silently not working.

EDIT: Looks to have been broken since mid-February.

So, bullet points:

* If you think you know how to fix this! Please tell me so I can try. I have been using Vienna for Mac.

* If you have made any important friends-only posts recently, poke me so I can be sure to check your journal.

* Since I find the friendspage a lot less efficient than a reader, friendslist trimming ahoy.

EDIT: Ugh, fuck all this. I'm going to be assembling some filters to make my life a little easier (refresh once a day versus refresh every five minutes, kind of thing).
