I'll be out of town August 14-21. While I'll have internet access, I have no idea how much I'll be online. But rest assured I'll catch up even if I can't keep up.

Recently

Bosses and one reference desk person are away for the Society of American Archivists conference. Work is freakishly quiet.

Busy couple of days. Tuesday morning, I hauled a box of fun surprises to the post office (since the TSA probably frowns on taking rope in your carry-on), went to work, and then went to Diesel to meet up with shadesong and receive my BARCC auction winnings: a lovely flogger. After that, I ran into Andra and spent forever telling her about C. (she kept asking questions, and I am still flush with omgyay).

Yesterday I got some purple dye, and this morning before work, I put it in my hair to see what it would do. Not a lot, as it turns out: my hair is too dark. Now it's even darker, with something of a blue cast to it. While kinda disappointing, it's not actually surprising, and it's definitely not a bad result.

Leaving for Grand Forks at stupid o'clock Saturday morning. Clothes are basically picked out, and toiletries are selected and quart-size bagged.

I know so little about you, I'm afraid my question is quite pedestrian! What would your dream job be?

Pretty close to what I'm doing right now. I want to be an archivist full-time, as my real grownup job. But I'm not thrilled with the idea of meetings and managing other people, which my bosses at work have to do. I just want to work with the collections.

I want to write about "lazy femme," which is what I call my gender presentation. In short: I like things like skirts and makeup, but I don't generally bother with these more effortful bits of gendered plumage.

  Basically, when you warn for same-sex sexyfuntimes, and state that it's a warning, you're not just providing a neutral description of the contents. You are explicitly saying, "I am buying into the meme that same-sex sexyfuntimes is alarming and bad!" even though you are writing it and you know that people will read it. You are catering to the concept that people who are squicked by it are totally right to be squicked by it and a lot of people are squicked by it and we don't blame you for being squicked by it, it's nasty gay sex.

  The Secret Feminist Cabal: A Cultural History of Science Fiction Feminisms is a gem of a book. Merrick explores the history of various feminisms in the context of SF/F, charting a history of feminist fandom spanning nearly a century. Like seriously? At one point, she talks about cosplay… in the 1930s.

• The Pervocracy: Normal?

  My social circle these days is pretty much all perverts. I got to Boston and I met people three ways: through the blog (perverts), through munches and other BDSM activities (perverts), and through the friends I already had here (disgusting, dangerous perverts). If I didn't have to work I think I would have forgotten what normal even looks like.

• Future Feminist Librarian-Activist:

  Hanna and I have both recently finished processing new collections at Northeastern -- "processing" being the archive-speak term for taking newly-acquired collections, organizing them, doing what we can to preserve them, and then making them accessible to the public. For each collection, Northeastern has a "finding aid" that details the scope and content of the collection, and provides some basic historical background on the person or organization.
  
  One of the things I really like about my job at Northeastern is that we actively collect materials from under-represented communities and social justice organizations in the Boston area -- specifically the queer community, the Latina/Latino community, Chinese and African-American communities.

  This is an article I ran into recently on an Israeli website (well, on my network actually, 'sup lea_hazel!), written by a 19 year trans guy about his upcoming enlistment into the IDF. I thought it might be interesting to share with y'all. The original Hebrew is full of stilted and sometimes overwrought phrasing and I favored a literal translation over a literary one, so just FYI. Thanks to torachan for looking it over.

Yay, so many links! I just finished Merrick's book last night and I thought it was excellent.

It's on my To Read list. Which is, uh, eighty million books long, approximately. But every rec moves it up a couple of places.
