Anti-monarchist high fantasy.
There must be some. Hit me with your recs.impertinence: this is not a furious screed; it is a constructive post
Every time warnings are discussed, people say something along the lines of, "How do these people even read books/watch TV/go outside?" To be completely honest, the question has always struck me as pretty condescending - but I suspect answering it might actually illuminate why so many people consider warnings an accessibility issue. Because the answer to the question, regardless of the action described, is: carefully, and not without some risk.

a community for sharing stories about your real-life sexual experiences and fantasies. It runs in a similar manner to various "anonymous kinkmeme" type communities: there are regular posts where people can give prompts, and other people can respond with stories. Anonymous commenting is encouraged, and people of all sexual preferences and genders are invited to join and participate.

seperis: so the history of warnings 101, i could go for this
I wonder if it would be worthwhile to have a panel on warnings, not just common triggers, but the historical perspective on them as vehicles of exclusion in fandom and how they've changed in meaning and reason for existence. A lot of perspective on them during the debates the last time and now is still shaped by when they were used against slash or against certain types of fic, vids, etc. And I didn't know until some discussion enlightened me on this that VVC was at least partially founded on a period of time when warnings themselves were used to exclude, not to facilitate inclusion.
commodorified: A brief note on trigger warnings
But I keep seeing conflations - or concern about conflations - between 'warning for potential triggers' and 'warning for offensive content'.
And I can see how people get there. Relatively few serious triggers are for inoffensive things. Some are - I know people who are triggered by certain songs, or certain sounds, or images, or smells, of themselves perfectly okay. But lots of triggers, a majority, I think, are for things like rape or torture or sexualised or gendered or racialised violence or cruelty to animals or children or depictions of war, or or or.fera_festiva: Steampunk art: The Lady Gaga
The emphasis is on the second syllable - Lady guh-GAH. Get it right or she will be most displeased.
- altblogathon:
Due to blogathon.org being offline in 2010, this site is being created as an attempt at a home, at least for 2010. Those involved in the technical aspects of blogathon.org are encouraged to help out. This site is not intended to compete with blogathon.org, and any and all help is appreciated.
A call for bloggers will happen on or before Saturday July 11th.
If you are interested in helping out on the tech side and know either wordpress or Drupal (we're still figuring out what talent we have so we haven't decided what the framework will be), please email info at altblogathon.com and let us know what your talents are.... verbosewordsmith: We're all little monsters (and there's some meta about Lady Gaga and queerness there)
Lady Gaga is interesting. She's out there doing whatever the hell she wants to, basically, performing this fantastic version of herself and deconstructing (either intentionally or not) celebrity culture and the performance of femininity. I can't help but find that kind of fascinating a feminist and a media scholar and someone who studies gender and queerness. I'm not a fan of Gaga's music but I am kind of a fan of what she's doing and how people are reacting to it.
marina: Where procrastination leads you
I just wish the language used wasn't about being a better person. It's not that those terms are irrelevant, they're very relevant within certain specific contexts. I judge many people to be assholes quite often! But when engaging in a more broad discussion they're... as terminology, they're muddled and subjective and they make the conversation more complicated and full of misunderstandings (see also: but what if I don't WANT to be nice? What if for me, being nice is just a codeword for silencing people who disagree with you?)
seperis: so the history of warnings 101, continued
If anyone else wants to share personal experience on warnings either historically or in their current form, please feel free to add a link and I'll organize these. I am going to go out on a limb and say that this topic is far from dead and I'd like to have a reference post to consult later.

littlebutfierce: Wicked Whimsy: Fashion & Accessibility
So how do you enjoy something when, whether intentionally or not, you’re left out of it? Good question – one I’m still trying to untangle in my head, while re-tooling my wardrobe so that it realistically fits my wants and needs, but still has some sort of aesthetic that I like. And here’s another one – what would make for more accessible fashion? This is what I came up with (psst, retailers! pay attention!):

access_fandom: Better microphone use at conventions: a report
At My Local Convention, the Access team made a big push toward improving microphone usage this year. This is separate from things we normally do such as marking off chairs for lip readers. Below are revised documents that I wrote to the concom, arguing for an investment in this cause.

N.B. I’ve tried multiple times to start posts, and sometimes the only way to describe how you feel about something is through a poem. I’ve thought about numerous things today: faith, power, access, care, healing, life, teaching, and the ability to reach out for help. The only complete writing I’ve yielded from all that is this poem. –MP
