No one's yet bothered to wire our household network - it's previously been all-wireless because Hugh and I had laptops with AirPort cards. But his iMac hasn't got one, so he can't use the internet with it.

Unless he plugs it into his laptop's ethernet port and uses that as the most cumbersome wireless card EVER. And even then he doesn't have anything except internet; no access to our local network.

He'd be unable to access the network connected through the laptop? That doesn't seem right...oh well.

Airport card for iMac ain't too expensive :P

We don't know why the internet works but the network doesn't.

He's cheap. And we are planning on wiring the whole house. But, um, it took fourteen years for my bedroom to get built, WTF?

Make sure hes on the right network.

He has to be on the right network, doesn't he? To even be able to connect to the internet?
We share our connection through a router which is connected to the base station, if that helps.

No not really, when I first got my laptop i set up the wi-fi it connected fine... then when i went to secure the network, i learned i had been using some one elses network, If there are more then 1 networks in your neighbor hood then theres a good chance hes on someone elses network. One that has an open interweb conneection. this is just some thing else you might want to look into.

There are at least two networks other than ours which my computer picks up on. We can't actually use one of those; we can only see it. The other other network doesn't seem to be set up to share anyone's internet connection; I've never had net access when I accidentally connect to that one instead of ours.

Pretty much, he's on the right network because he can get the internet. I think him not being able to do anything else network-ish may come from how secure he's made the network. *shrugs* It's not my problem.
