If this trip is between 5 and 10 days with no formal occasions, 2 pairs of shoes will be fine. My preferred choice of traveling shoes is one pair that goes with everything and one pair that is ready for a weather extreme (in this case, you'll probably want to have shoes that handle either cold or wet better). Then again, I went to Alaska with one pair of shoes.

What kind of vacation are we talking? Can't comment on anything by my own favourite colour without knowing that :o)

I'm all in favour of dresses as being the easiest way to pack light and still carry more than one pair of shoes. :D

Really? Dresses are the least efficient way to pack light because you have to take a new one for each day of the trip. With jeans/shorts/skirts, that is not necessary.

Ah, I think the material of my dresses may factor into this. I tend to go for slinky, crumple-able material and above-the-knee styles, so my dresses are so light I can usually stuff them into small handbags if necessary.

You may already have left, but if not, I recommend bringing clothes you ought to get rid of, anyways - then chuck when they're dirty: insta-free space in the suitcase!

I've done that on countless vacations, and it's awesome having a lighter suitcase on the way back (or room for greater haul)! It's getting harder to do these days, where I actually would like to be well-dressed when on vacation :o)
