The Rise of the Rat People

Here's another weird mob I've read about. I've previously mentioned the "lying flat" trend in China, where young people have rejected the fiercely workaholic mainstream ethos, and instead do what they have to and no more. The mainstream ethos advocates working from "9 am to 9 pm" seven days, so you can see why some folk have rebelled.

But seems you can't have a crazy trend without someone else trying to out-crazy it, and so now we have the Rat People. I can say, having my own members of rattus norvegicus to study, that getting up for breakfast and then going back to bed is absolutely a ratty habit.

Subscription tidy up

I've done my approximately-annual tidy up of dreamwidth subscriptions. I've stopped following a set of blogs that haven't updated in ~2 years, left roughly half the communities I was in, and changed a few other details. The main exceptions on keeping people who don't post are people who comment often enough that I remember; at least one of those I've left their access but unsubscribed. The other exception is people who I'm very much hoping will turn up again one day (and one who, sadly, will never be back, but whose name makes me smile to see it in the list).

If, as happens with this, I've managed to remove your access and you are someone who does actually want to see the occasional locked post, please comment on this post. I'll put a locked post up shortly; it will read 'test' or some equally inane thing.

Mixing writers with politics

With this demon icon, I'm referring to a scene in Supernatural where a character explains that you know what you're going to get from a demon. They're a predictable evil. Though I will note, that in all the lore about making a deal with a demon, there's one interesting item that shows up: Hell stays bought. What they promise, you will receive. You just better be really careful about reading the fine print. They must have a lot of lawyers down there.

But people will screw you up in all the ways that come to mind, and more. One of the recent insanities I've been tracking is the story of a writers' festival in Adelaide, an event where the chosen writers get to talk to their adoring - or not so much - public, spruik their books and answer questions. When politics enters the picture, the agenda can go off the tracks, because writers don't know any more about politics than anyone else, in general.

So here, a writer was invited. Her politics were well known. Then it was decided by the board of that festival that she should be disinvited, details why in the link. There was much howling and rending of garments. Personally, I think they could have just stuck her in her own tent or space, and then anyone who wanted could go hear/talk to her or ignore her. From what I can see, those writers who have cancelled have done so not because they agree with her, but because they agree you shouldn't silence someone with whom you disagree.

And, we're back to Monday! Whooo! IT's probably going to be a busy day with a lot of tea and warm drinks to get through without coughing. I think it is slowly improving, just a lot slower than I'd like. At the rate I'm going , it'll be another 3-5 days before I'm better, unless the steroids do a sudden kung fu maneuver on my lungs. Which is not seeming likely. It's helped some, but not like I was hoping. On the plus side, aside from some sleep issues, I haven't been overly angry, so the ADHD meds are holding strong.

It's weird that ADHD meds have done so much for my anxiety and mood swings. It's just like a warm blanket and cup of tea for my body and brain. When he gave the meds, the doctor mentioned that it might cause anxiety or hype me up. But in reality, I feel much more solid and relaxed when I have the medication. Apparently, it's not unusual for women to have that reaction, because for us sometimes, ADHD can be different, and of course no one studied it until recently, so it's tough to find the info. For women, it can involve being inattentive--having trouble concentrating on one thing, anxiety, mood swings, feeling the desperate need to be doing something, but not being able to chose or focus. And the meds just...turned that off. Now I only have anxiety in the evenings when the drug wears off. I really wish I could have a short acting that I could take at about 5 to ease me into the night time sleepy meds. But doctors are weird about controlled substances.

Yesterday was a nice day. It started with a game that [personal profile] coyotegestalt is running--a 9 session "one shot." To be fair, it probably would have been a shorter game if I was a bit less of a chaos demon from Hell. It was planned that the giant and his dragons would fly away, and we'd have to chase.

In practice, I blinded one of the dragons, and they crashed, and I started an absolutely bonkers fight with probably a hundred enemies. (Most low level and easily destroyed, with about 6 heavy hitters.

Most of my rounds have been given over to healing, but this last game, I got the chance to do something cool. One of my spells was "control water." We had a giant water elemental come in and flood an enormous swath of beach, catching several of my companions in it. Control water is ridiculously overpowered, so in one turn, I cleared half the beach of water, ala Moses. This allowed Jess' character Kragnik to run up the beach and punch a dragon to death. (The Monk class is wild.)

Then, before my next turn, Kragnik ran after the giant, and was about to try to take him on solo. My character, Casey has a bit of a crush on Kragnik, and was not having that, so they cast Harm on the giant, which killed it. Of course, immediately afterwards, Kragnik got smacked real hard by a the giant wave, so next turn will definitely be healing. It was super fun, and I felt good that I could get us out of the problem I had 100% caused. Fortunately [personal profile] coyotegestalt does not blame me for my Chaos Muppet tendencies, even if it changed the game they planned.

After that, we sat and watched two episodes of Bake Off, which was lovely. We finished Pastry and Meringue week. Then, I fucked around on the internet and looked at vacations for 2028. We're already set for this year and next, with Alaska this year, and Iceland to Rotterdam next year.

I'm thinking about a Mediterranean cruise in 2028. We'd board in Barcelona and go to Athens with stops in Cannes, France, Sicily, Rome, Crete and Mykonos. It sounds very tempting. The real expense is going to be the airfare. I joined Ratepunk, so I can keep an eye out for the cities to see what we can find.

I'll have to continue to hoard my PTO so that I'll be good for that in 2 years. It's a 10 day cruise, so I'll need at least 14 days of PTO out of the 17 I get. (18 if MLK continues as it's been.). It's a lot, but it's a 10 day cruise, and I'd like a day in Barcelona and a day in Athens to explore. It's Europe, so we're going to eat a 15-20hrs each way with travel. So that should do it.

After spending years not being able to really go anywhere, I'm definitely making the most of the ability to travel. There's places I want to see, dammit.

After I finished looking at the possibile ships available to cruise on, I made dinner, pork chops with Saltverk's Arctic Thyme salt and perogies with sour cream and sauerkraut. (Jess skipped the sauerkraut. Not a fan.)

Then we walked the dog and retired to our bedroom to wind down. It was a lovely day and I am glad I had it, since work today is sure to be busy.

And on that note, I shall hop off and get myself together. On the plus side, I got some hard boiled eggs, so I don't have to worry about doing that. It's lazy, but I'm still sick, so fuck it.

Everyone have an amazing Monday!

Come vs Cum: a vocabulary discussion

You'll have picked up that there's a lot of sex in the show (and book) Heated Rivalry. And, unsurprisingly, there's a lot in the fanfic.

And one thing I'm having to deal with is a bunch of otherwise perfectly readable authors referring to "cum". It almost knocks me out of the mood, but not quite.

Having issues about spelling come as cum is doubtless linked with me being older than dirt and having learned English not just in school but from reading a hell of a lot of novels (before sinking without trace into fanfic). And I probably associate cum with porn dialogue, so that's partly an embarrassment thing, and partly me being a snob.

Anyway, I did some research on the interwebs and the most frequent viewpoint is:
  • cum is the noun
  • come is the verb
From etymonline.com, cum dates from 1973, initially used as a noun and mostly in porn, now used more widely and as both a noun and verb. Come is obviously a lot older, but as a synonym for ejaculating it seems to date from the 1500-1600s, and as semen, from the 1920s.

Which is all very well, but I just have a visceral dislike of the word cum. I'm going "ew, gross", like Shane when people use the term "lovers". It looks like a spelling mistake to me, and I doubt I'll ever use it in a fic except in a fake porn video title. So that leaves me stubbornly using come, or writing in a way that avoids the word altogether, because I am also not going to use "semen" or (worse) "ejaculate", except in very specific circumstances. Not to mention "reach completion" or "climax". Nope. Slang terms like jizz, spunk and spooge are sometimes okay in dialogue though, or in the pov of characters where it wouldn't be ooc.

What about you: come or cum? Enquiring minds want to know! Don't feel limited to its use in Heated Rivalry - this applies in most fandoms, and in some profic, I bet.

Trip, part 2

From Hong Kong, [personal profile] thevetia and I flew to Hangzhou, China (~2 hours' flight). Hangzhou, a sprawling city of over 11 million, is the capital of Zhejiang Province and is most famous for its West Lake. It was the capital city of the Southern Song dynasty from 1132-1276. It's where Chinese tech giant Alibaba is headquartered, is home to several universities, and has been referred to as a tech capital/Silicon Valley. Zhejiang Province's history includes the Neolithic Liangzhu culture (~3300-2300 BCE), and the region is known for its longjing ("dragonwell") green tea.

Sigh.

I got a set of cute little penguin pens. They're very cute. So cute.

I didn't realize that each pen has a little motto on it, or I might've not bought them. You see, one continuing annoyance since childhood is that writing on pens is always upside down if you're left-handed. Oh, you can get pens where the writing is oriented correctly, that is, for lefties, but for some reason all that writing inevitably is left-handed themed! I don't want my right side up pen motto to say something like "Only lefties are in their right mind!", I want it to say something like "Hope you are happy every day", which is the upside down motto on this purple penguin.

It's the same with left-handed rulers, incidentally. I just want the numbers to go in a sensible direction, I don't need my ruler to affirm how wonderful it is that I'm drawing lines with my left hand.

On a related note, I'm seriously considering buying another pair of lefty kitchen shears for work. I don't really have to spend much time in the kitchen, but if I am in the kitchen and using kitchen shears (almost inevitably to cut up the next day's lunch sandwiches but sometimes to cut up breakfast pancakes and sausages) I'd rather use mine than theirs, because cutting with the wrong scissors is painful and messy. But if I bring my sole pair - which is amazing, I love it, best Christmas present ever! - back and forth with me then sometimes I use it at home, forget to put it back in my bag, and then am irritated for three days until I finally remember again. I could ask them to supply shears for me and keep them in the kitchen drawer, it's a legitimate (and small!) expense, but honestly, I know from experience that righties are terrible and when they accidentally use left-handed scissors they get very confused and irritated. Amusing for me, but undoubtedly an exercise in frustration for a workplace. It's really better all around to bring my own.

Catalogue check (2024) update

I've managed to winkle out some of the books that didn't get spotted while I was doing the catalogue check in 2024 (which finished, for logistics reasons, in about February 2025).

And I've just looked at the number of tags that I have (>2K) and decided that is ridiculous. The first pass I'm doing is changing all the old location tags to [year] - last seen (not the 'unchecked/not yet seen' ones, those I'm going to think about some more). Because where any book was in 2021 (etc) is obviously not right, or I would have found it there in 2024. Once I've done that for all years prior to 2024, I'm going to go poke at the various 'unchecked' tags and see what is there.

other things I've noticed that I want to reorder

  • mythology should be mythology - [country]
  • awards should be awards: [name]
  • I have juvenile and kids and junior fiction and possibly some others, as well as a set of age: [...] categories; need to think what I want to do here.

Posted by aninfiniteweirdo

In previous posts, I have talked about data fandom and fan labour as something inherently linked to commercialization. In a paper I read, though, I discovered a case where data fandom was used as a tool – both to achieve certain goals on social media directly and to transform the participants’ fannish identity.

When the Dallas police launched the app iWatch Dallas for people to report law-breaking demonstrators, K-pop fans flooded the Dallas police official Twitter account with random K-pop videos—and many of these videos were fan cams. The app was disabled due to “technical issues” within a day, possibly because of such negative reactions on social media (Alexander 2020). Later, many K-pop fans spammed racist, white supremacist Twitter hashtags, such as #WhiteLivesMatter, with fan cams, eventually leading to these tags’ trending under the “K-pop” category on Twitter (Aswad 2020).

Zhang, Muxin. 2024. “Fandom Image Making and the Fan Gaze in Transnational K-pop Fan Cam Culture.” In “Fandom and Platforms,” edited by Maria K. Alberto, Effie Sapuridis, and Lesley Willard, special issue, Transformative Works and Cultures, no. 42. https://doi.org/10.3983/twc.2024.2463.

Fans in general are certainly very aware of discourse about them and their activities – that is the entire premise of this blog. It is more of a question of whether a transformative approach is accessible, not if we are aware that alternatives might be needed.

However, Zhang also shows that this use of fancams was not universal among stans. The difference is made between North American fans and South Korean fans and this difference is attributed to the identification with an idol’s success.

This identification might be very well grounded in the way the industry operates.

(…) fan leaders are portrayed as individual opinion leaders or fan clubs (formal or informal) who set the agenda and organize the collective action of daily fan activities, while they also function as intermediaries maintaining a close communication with the idol’s media companies and uniting individual fans.

Wu, Xueyin. 2021. “Fan Leaders’ Control on Xiao Zhan’s Chinese Fan Community.” Transformative Works and Cultures, no. 36. https://doi.org/10.3983/twc.2021.2053.

Because of this coordination between the media company and fan leaders, the activities of fans can have an impact of the idol’s reputation and thus success. This responsibility is not shared by the North American fans.

In this way, while all the fans described can identify with their bias but it is an identification that is expressed in different ways which leaves them with different ways of expressing their fannish identity. Though, we are only looking at one case here, it already reveals some of the complexities and nuances we can encounter in fandom.

Tuning, tuning

I got the G-D diatonic autoharp completely restrung over the last few days. With 36 steel strings, having to remove each old string and then having to slide each one under the chord bars, that takes a while. This time was worse than usual.

The old strings were very old. I decided to restring the whole thing because the harp just didn't sound good, no matter how in tune the strings were. Harsh is probably the best word for what I was hearing. The strings were all, to a greater or lesser degree, corroded, fragile, and/or stubbornly set in their ways. I had to use my small pliers and a good bit of force to get some of the strings out of the string anchor; and some of the strings broke in a way that left just enough in the pegs that getting ahold of the bits to get them out was challenging. Of course, those bits had to be removed before a new string could be fed through the hole and the peg tightened.

So it took a while!

But now all the strings are new and shiny, and each one sounds a lot better than the one it replaced. If played one at a time, which, of course, is not how you play an autoharp. 36 steel strings put a lot of tension on the frame, which, once the strings have settled in means the weather doesn't pull an autoharp out of tune nearly as much as a guitar. Not having tuning pegs designed for fingers also helps, since no light bump will detune a string. Usually you can let autoharp strings remain for quite a while, unless they break, and all instrument strings break from time to time. I have gotten pretty good at replacing one string at a time and manually stretching it so it settles down pretty quickly.

But all new strings? All stretching and settling in at the same time? It's going to be a while before I get the thing enough in tune to play a whole song without wincing. And then I bet I'll have to retune it after each song for a bit, since the strings will stretch differently in response to being played at first.

So I'm once again remembering my sister's adage: Slow progress is still progress.

Still, I am happy to have gotten this far. Maybe tomorrow I'll replace the strings on the guitar I play most often. Those strings don't sound as good as they used to either. And it won't take anywhere near so long to retune and get the strings settled in!

Update: This evening's retuning wasn't as bad as I expected. Maybe I did a better job of stretcing them as I put them in than I thought! Fingers crossed!
