Roommate search may wind up resolved by boyfriend moving in. (We need to discuss it seriously, but that'll keep until the end of the month when he's actually here - especially since my phone is old and bitchy and drops calls like a motherfucker.)

As we've been long-distance for three years now (and have spent a total of 2-3 months actually in each other's presence over those three years): Separate. Bedrooms. I need my spaaaaaaaaace. Also, there is no way whatsoever to fit another person in my room for real (not just a houseguest kipping on my futon).

It's been non-stop family togetherness since I last posted, including a trip to IKEA (we love IKEA). Since I like my family, this is fine by me.

( details by day )

comments

History prof is totally my favorite today! Our last class is on a Monday (the very last day of classes for the semester, actually), and our paper isn't due until the Friday after class ends. o_O

I am actually leaving Boston that Friday, and going to Maryland for a long weekend. JetBlue was running a 25% sale, and even before that discount, tickets were much cheaper than they had been for Thanksgiving holiday travel. I'll be with Cory and his family from Friday the 14th to Tuesday the 18th... giving me time to recuperate from the hell semester and finish that seminar paper before I leave, and to clean my damn apartment before my parents get here for Christmas.

I meant to have a batch of holiday cards in the mail today but I kinda failed on that. Soon, though! In the meantime, still plenty of time to ask me to send you one.

Now to answer comments and get groceries. Not necessarily in that order, or both this evening.

comments

Community archives thing at the Anarchist Bookfair went reasonably well although none of us had the faintest idea what we were doing. We're going to keep doing it though! Improvement through repetition etc.

Bonus of attending Anarchist Bookfair: bumped into my friend Jeremy and got to catch up with him a bit. I hadn't seen him in ages, which I suppose it what happens when I am friends with people who live in Somerville.

I am now the happy owner of several secondhand cashmere sweaters in good condition. I shall be toasty all winter. :)

I was invited to spend Thanksgiving with Cory and his family but, due to the cost of travel for said holiday and the fact that I will continue to be Overwhelmed By School until this damned semester is over, I have decided to zip down there some time between the end of classes and my parents' arrival in Boston for Christmas.

comments

okay, seriously

I am granting myself dreamroll amnesty. I will never catch up and I'm just going to have to be okay with that.

Because, I shit y'all not, I have not been around since shortly after Con.txt. I was eaten by an unfortunate combination of Analog Life (mostly work, now work + class), tumblr (so low-effort!), fic on AO3, and a grue.

( Major things happening for me right now: work, school, nerdy games, relationship, fandom )

Clearly nerdy games are the bright spot in my life. Pretty sure that group are my BFFs.

I also revived my abandoned twitter account tonight. Whee, back on the social media wagon.

So, two things to conclude:
1. If there's anything you need me to know that has happened since, like, mid-June, comment or email me or something? :)
2. If you are in or near Boston, come to the Anarchist Bookfair. Especially come on Sunday, November 11, at 11:00! Most of my Community Archives class (including me) will be on a panel about community archives.

comments

I have been so busy having a face-to-face life that I haven't had any time to post. :( I miss you guys!

Shadowrun continues to be really enjoyable, although I have a bad feeling Sayuri's going to be the first PC to die. I got shot in the back the session before last (failed a lot of Perception rolls), and then this Monday I was down to two overflow boxes of damage and my medkit auto-activated to save me. Then again I suppose it's only fair, since I'm the one who kills most of the NPCs that need killing. (Our group consists of Cid's middle-aged family-man hacker, Dave's hermetic mage, and Nathaniel's shaman. My character is the one with the most combat skills.)

( winter holiday meanderings )

And I already have Cory's gift. Dice, as always - really awesome metal dice that will be the envy of his D&D groups (three of them now!). One of our Silly Relationship Things is that, whatever else we may exchange on major gift occasions, there must also be dice (for him) and something with Hello Kitty on it (for me). But he has recently upset the balance by sending me dice because I started playing Shadowrun (he's got this belief that everyone should have their own dice and not share them, which is not at all how my group functions but whatever). So, for my amusement and to right the balance of the universe, I must of course give him a Hello Kitty object. Suggestions welcome!

comments

21 Days for Dreamwidth

Links

azurelunatic: I exist, and I exist in many universes. (Yet another rant about queer erasure)
Silence = Death. If fictional people are silenced by their authors, then fuck yeah, we're marching right the fuck in and giving them voices.

Plans

Get on plane. Change planes in New York. Maybe briefly meet up with Kajsa in Baltimore. Get self + suitcase to the Haus of Fangirl in MD.

comments

obnoxiously happy and brimming with warm and fuzzies

Recently

MCR show in Boston was great! I was one person back but used a couple of crowd surges during Thursday's set and the break before MCR to wedge myself into a little opening on the barrier. Ellie came late, so we met up afterward and went to IHOP because we were both starving. (I had to bail on tuesdaysgone and skip the Philly show because I was so exhausted, and because some combination of lights/noise/hunger gave me a terrible headache.)

Boston Slutwalk! I met up with a bunch of people I know mainly via Mob. We marched (super powerful experience! Almost an altered state, with an abnormal boost to my lung capacity akin to what I experience at concerts), there were some amazing speeches (finally got to hear shadesong give a survivor speech. I put myself at the front of the crowd pretty much directly in front of her, because she had posted about feeling stressed about this particular speech and I wanted to guarantee a known-friendly face in case that would help), and then it started raining, so I went with two friends to the workshop space, where we took the responsibility of setting up chairs and enjoyed some relaxation time. I stayed for three workshops before I had to bail for food.

thefridayfive

( questions about love and marriage )

Plans

I need to pack tomorrow. On Monday, I fly into Baltimore (arriving around 3:15). Concert Tuesday, then back to Boston on Wednesday.

I am not thinking about August until I get back from D.C. (I cannot; I am too scatterbrained to hold that many plans in my head at once), but I am determined to celebrate our anniversary either by dragging Cory to Boston or schlepping myself to Grand Forks again, which involves lots of scheduling and stalking the internet for best airfare.

comments

vid show for my boyfriend

( Backstory )

Here is, reconstructed as well as I could manage, Vids I Showed My Boyfriend As Part Of My Attempts To Explain Transformational Fandom:

( with helpful links )

I am working on a Vids 201 playlist as well. Suggestions welcome.

comments

I already have a few ideas of things to post. If there are things you would like me to post about, then prompt me. (No guarantees, since I will be offline for 5+ days, but I will try.)

Questions meme!

Too down for a real post.

Turbo developed chronic kidney disease; Mom and Dad brought him in yesterday. He always loved going to the vet, especially when we were going on vacation so he got to stay there for a few days and have lots of social interaction. He got to hang out with one of his favorite vet techs yesterday. He was big for a Jack Russell - we thought he'd be smaller because we saw him alongside a bunch of Golden Retriever puppies - and he was never very healthy (allergic to people, other dogs, and out pre-Katrina lawn). But my mother still has three or so feral cats to look after, so that's something.

I've also realized that I am experiencing some twitchiness about my relationship, and engaging in some (logical but still not healthy) sabotaging behaviors. Not ready to blog about it, I don't think.

I'll be back in New Orleans in less than a month. I'm supposed to be working on my extended bibliography because I'm meeting with my advisor again on Wednesday, but today is just not the day for getting anything done. I made myself a sandwich and I sorted my stuff from the clean laundry and put it away. The rest of my day has been playing a silly little puzzle game over and over, and leaving a chat window open with Cory on the other end. It's comforting.

Quizzical Pussy: Legacy
I’m still a beaten girlfriend somewhere deep down.

I’m realizing who profoundly affected I really am by it all, to this day. My self-esteem was never great to begin with, but staying in a physically and emotionally abusive relationship for years trained even that scant confidence out of me. And while, believe it or not, I’ve scraped a fair amount back for myself, if we’re making comparisons, I can’t escape the learned worthlessness that was my liturgy for so long.

Shakesville: My Point, Here It Is
When I ask a person not to engage in rape apologia in this space, because it is my space and I have not only not consented to host rape apologia here, but have also explicitly and repeatedly deemed it off-limits, and that person continues to engage in rape apologia nonetheless, without regard for my boundaries or personal autonomy, that's not exactly someone who's demonstrating a commitment to the notions of consent, autonomy, and respect.

That's someone who's leveraging the values of a rape culture to violate my boundaries.

That's someone who's acting like a fucking rapist.

Boston Area Rape Crisis Center Blog: Community Conversations
Rape is different than other types of violent crime. In my mind, rape is a lot like a hate crime, targeted at a particular group in order to scare and intimidate them. The reason we punish hate crimes differently than other crimes is because they affect the behavior of more than one person. An assault is always bad; we don't, as a society, condone assault (at least I hope we don't). But an assault perpetrated against a member of a particular community, let's say, or against a person of a particular ethnic background and infused with the intent to intimidate and scare everyone else who shares that background causes a lot more ripples than an assault that doesn't have that motivation. I can be scared of crime when I leave my house, but I'm not afraid that someone will specifically target me because of my gender or race. I don't have to worry that someone, seeking to work out their own misogyny or racism will choose to do violence on my body to satisfy their own issues. If I did, you'd better bet that it would change my behavior. I'd be a whole hell of a lot more careful about what I said, where I went, and how I acted.

thingswithwings: how to defend against accusations of hating queers
Anyway, this is just a rambling list of examples, but I guess I'm listing them just because it frustrates me so much, the way these creators are all huge fucking cowards who aren't brave enough to write a queer character into their children's book, their tv show, their novel; huge fucking cowards who blame the episode running long or the whims of the story itself (the story just never went there! it's like novels are magical creatures with self-determined lives of their own and not texts written by people!) for the fact that queerness is reduced to subtextual or extratextual appearances; huge fucking cowards who will use this not-quite-queer not-quite-not-queer kind of character to simultaneously protect themselves from criticism (if Dumbledore's not gay in the actual book, then his unrequited love for a monster isn't problematic) and protect themselves from the accusation that they fail to include queers. It's a giant pile of bullshit.

comments

Catching you up on me: Maryland

Irrational terror has proved to be irrational! In other words: no, his parents didn't hate me. They actually seemed to like me. :)

We spent most of our time lounging around the house, interrupted by a day trip to Washington, a couple of restaurant meals, and a visit from Cory's brother and future sister-in-law.

Overall, it wasn't all that restful a time, since I had to be 'on' for a pretty large portion of every day. Plus the headache I had for the first two days I was there, and the ongoing problem of being allergic to the dog (and also probably the carpets; this is why I love hardwood floors). But Cory and I are pretty good at the whole "companionably ignore each other" thing, where we do separate things in the same room, and [the rest of this is filtered].

comments

Lazyweb, I seek your assistance!

So I mentioned a little while back that I am visiting Cory's parents after Christmas.

I am totally sending them a card, whenever he gets around to giving me an address. I am also going to send a card to his brother Chris and Chris's girlfriend Kajsa (who was one of Ellie's friends in high school, actually).

But I also want to get them gifts! Because I do that! !!!! And this is where I turn to you, oh lazyweb...

Kajsa crochets; I can get her some yarn, y? Or am I projecting my own desire to be gifted with craft supplies? Other people who crochet: what is a reasonable quantity of yarn?

As for the other three, I am completely lost and I doubt Cory will be any kind of help. What kinds of things are reasonable, non-weird (well, non-excessively-weird) gifts for the parents and siblings of one's partner?

I get that this is probably a weird and excessive thing to be doing, but. *hands* I had a Thing about the holiday season as a kid - I tried to get stuff for all my cousins, even the ones I wouldn't be seeing (not make my mom get stuff and put my name in the From: field. Pick it out myself, even if she did give me the money to pay for it). It faded for a while, and then a few years ago, the holiday wishlist meme and the people offering to send out cards brought it out again.

comments

I have had A Day.

First things first: wow was that presale a total clusterfuck. I was kind of shaking after.

On the bright side, I did get tickets for 3 of the 5 shows I wanted: Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. (The D.C. presale sold out before I even made it over to that tab following the Ticketmaster/Live Nation failures. Better luck Saturday, especially since I've been appointed head of a ticket-buying cabal. And I was iffy on NJ but it looks like enough people are going that I can find a ride.)

Now I shall sum up my vacation! Only about two weeks late, ooops. Halloween was Rocky Horror, and then I spent Monday and Tuesday morning catching up on the internet while Cory was at work. Starting on Wednesday, I called Ellen to pick me up for hanging out, thrift shopping, visiting Adam Kemp's studio/gallery, etc. We had dinner with Ellen and Greg on Wednesday. On Thursday, we went to a lecture given by one of Greg's colleagues, then to a gallery opening where we met up with Ellen's friends Brian and Jerry, and then pizza.

( On the subject of Grand Forks: I'm considering an extended visit this summer. )

Aw, you guys! MCR is playing in Boston as a graduation present for me!! Their show is the night before commencement (which I have decided not to bother with).

I want to go to as many of their shows as possible. Definitely New York (which is on Mom's birthday and makes me so fucking sad they're not going to New Orleans), maybe Philadelphia (can do by bus but would rather have a ride); other possible shows that require I make buddies with a car-owner include Montreal, Sayreville, and D.C. Who out there will be driving to shows, preferably departing from Boston, and has room in their car for one tiny person who will chip in for gas, food, and lodgings?

I am sad that the Minneapolis show isn't a few days later; with no classes Tuesday and Friday plus Monday the 18th off, I could make it out there and introduce Cory to that side of myself. I am even sadder that Mom doesn't get a show. She might combine the Atlanta show with a visit to Fiona, Dan, and Maddie, but it's in the middle of a school week, and she's not going to drive to Texas.

comments

Wheeee!

So my Saturday totally sucked!

Remember how I was really worried about making my connection at JFK? It turned out not to be an issue at all, but for all the wrong reasons.

But I did finally make it to Grand Forks, four hours after I should have. And then I slept for 16 hours.

comments

Recently

Went to a wedding on Saturday (it was lovely), then to the afterparty (where I spent a long time explaining my research to my brand new friend Jeremy). Groceries Sunday; Ellie wanted to try a new grocery store that's closer than our usual, but it's a bit more expensive, missing various items we use regularly, and really annoying to shop at. Monday evening, after Ellie got back from buying several hundred pounds of lumber in New Hampshire, we went to the mall. Ellie got a coat and a shirt, but not the pants she was actually looking for. I got a dress for my Halloween costume and pants for future MCR concerts - both on clearance, woooo! (And in online shopping news, I bought a Turkish spindle and a colorful batt called Show Pony.)

In schmoopy relationship news, Cory and I are apparently taking a short trip to Minneapolis (I predict some squabbling over road trip music; we have very different philosophies about music in general). Also, you can see my increased comfort in this relationship by the contents of my suitcase: last time, I packed dresses and shoes and makeup. This time I am packing, uh idk, some clothes? and also some fiber. And a surprise! (because I feel like that would be a nice thing to do), so help me think up TSA-approved surprises? Also also: he knows this journal exists and he knows exactly where it is and I make mostly public posts - and yet he refuses to read it. IDGI.

Links

comments

Recently

Work, mostly. solarcat and I are going to Garment District and maybe some other places this weekend, for Killjoys costuming purposes. (I also need to figure out a Ramona Flowers costume, since Cory has decided that's what we're doing for Halloween, since I'll be in Grand Forks and all.)

Ellie and I spent some time last night talking about our plans for revamping the apartment. The main thrust is to make our space better for our creative pursuits. So much of it depends on her having the time and spoons to build new furniture, so no idea when any of it will get done. I can post an outline of our plans, with crappy diagrams, if anyone is interested.

Links

via saystheheart: Safeword, the s&m superhero

Married to the Sea: new uniforms

via cofax7: Gerald M. Weinberg: What’s Been the Effect of Banning My Stuff?
Whatever it was intended to do, banning things increases interest. When one of the Pope’s Cardinals banned The DaVinci Code, lagging sales picked up and made a few more millions for Mr. Brown. Banning Harry Potter had a similar effect for Ms. J. K. Rowling, now richer than the Queen.

(Tangent: I once got to attend one of Jerry's workshops. He and my dad go pretty far back; we would usually pay him a visit when we took our road trips to New Mexico. Jerry knew I was working on a novel, he was running a writing workshop and it was going to be pretty fiction-oriented, and he hadn't seen Dad in a while. So Dad and I took a week off work/school and went. It was awesome.)

(And another tangent: Wow has my life been full of fantastic opportunities and experiences that resulted directly from grown-ups taking a chance on me. Including my current job.)

Plans

I am considering StrowlerCon, but would need roommates. I also need to run it past Ellie and see if she wants in.

comments

Recently

Post office seems to be holding everything Ellie and I receive from outside the United States. "Pissed off" is putting it lightly, especially since I pretty much have to leave work early to make it to our local post office before it closes.

Work has been kind of meh this week. And Cory hasn't been online much for the past few days. And Ellie is too spoonless to cook. And the temperature dropped kind of suddenly. Many things contributing to my overall bleh right now. I am looking forward to the weekend.

ETA: Cory is back online. Much cheered by this. :)

As for MCR: thanks for finally giving us some real news, fuckers. And the album does sound like something I'd like. But I will forever be sad that we won't get Black Dragon Fighting Society.

Recently

I bought more fiber! Only a few batts, though, and none of them were very expensive. Still need to learn ALL the steps for knitting projects, not just the part in the middle.

And I was chattering about Dreamwidth to Cory, and he started asking questions, and now I think I may have recruited his entire D&D group. Or at least him, for the purpose of a D&D blog. I foresee some unofficial Support work in my future...

Follow Friday

britcoms
Anything and everything relating to British comedies is welcome there (reviews, news, favourite clips, fanfiction, discussions about actors' other projects, and anything else I've forgotton to mention). The only no-no is filesharing of full-length, commercially available episodes; otherwise, join in and have fun!

But it’s certainly a step in the right direction, of getting people to think beyond ‘special treatment‘ by positioning accessibility as something broadly relevant to most people, and something of equal importance as ‘who, what, where, when, why, and how.’ Which, for many of us, it is.

85 minutes of bleach later

Recently

I can haz purple hair! No pictures yet because I am lazy, but it does not suck. (The purple streak does fade rather quickly to nearly black as you move away from my scalp, but given how many times it had been dyed before these shenanigans, I can't say I'm surprised.)

Have been approved to take another week off work, sometime between mid October and Thanksgiving (has to be before Thanksgiving because $winterholiday retail season is likely to constrain the amount of time C. has for me). Now to find a suitably cheap plane ticket. On the one hand, yay I get to see my boyfriend again! On the other... and then I won't see him until some time in 2011.

Long post is really fucking long.

Notes

Not dead! Back in Boston since Saturday, and already caught up on things!

Recently

Just finished eating half the curry I made tonight; the other half is in the fridge. I am going to bring it to work tomorrow. Leftovers for lunch - it's almost like I'm a real grown-up!

Ellie and I went to the mall yesterday. We were supposed to get clothes for her. Instead, we got clothes for me. /o\ On the other hand, Hello Kitty rain boots in grown-up sizes, fuck yes.

I continue to experiment with purple hair. Attempt 3 (dark purple over failed single-process bleach-and-purple) is the best yet but still not quite right.

Grand Forks

( Spent nearly every waking moment with C., got to see my family, consumed much media. Was not really online. )

Relationship Stuff

( :D! )

We're planning more visits, and I convinced C. to install Skype. But I think my journal will stop being All About My Boyfriend now; he'll show up from time to time along with other important people in my life.

Memery

From Ask Me Anything:

Looking back, are you comfortable with the way you reacted when your sister came out to you?

Not really. :( I could have done more. I am especially disappointed with how little help I was to her in 2006/2007, her last year of high school, while she was trying to figure things out. True, I didn't have nearly as much knowledge of gender and trans* issues then, but I probably still could have been more supportive than I actually was.

But as far as her actual coming-out? I think I did okay then, although I didn't adjust to name-and-pronouns as fast as I would have liked, even if there is a specific reason for it (trying not to out her to Mom and Dad before she had the chance to tell them herself).

Links

( 10 links )

Plans

Figure out Netflix. Buy more $5 vermouth for cooking.

comments

Recently

While I am still theoretically AFK, C. is playing video games so I'm online. Heh.

We've watched The Guild, Dr. Horrible (again), and Stranger Than Fiction. Yesterday, we saw Scott Pilgrim (and I suspect we might wind up seeing it again). Plus, you know, hanging out and stuff. :)

Scott Pilgrim

( So apparently I'm Ramona Flowers. (Not a review, may contain very basic spoilers.) )

Links

( 4 links )

Plans

C. and I are getting dinner with some more of his friends tonight. I still need to call my relatives and make plans with them.

comments

Brief update.

I am in Grand Forks, getting spectacularly laid. \o/ More details in a post to the sex filter.

Actually getting to spend time with C. is awesome. This was such a good idea. We just fit together. I cannot stop smiling.

ETA: Scott Pilgrim fanworks. I need them. Point me to any and all fic, vids, art, kink memes, and whatever else you know of.

comments

long post is long

Notes

I'll be out of town August 14-21. While I'll have internet access, I have no idea how much I'll be online. But rest assured I'll catch up even if I can't keep up.

Recently

Bosses and one reference desk person are away for the Society of American Archivists conference. Work is freakishly quiet.

Busy couple of days. Tuesday morning, I hauled a box of fun surprises to the post office (since the TSA probably frowns on taking rope in your carry-on), went to work, and then went to Diesel to meet up with shadesong and receive my BARCC auction winnings: a lovely flogger. After that, I ran into Andra and spent forever telling her about C. (she kept asking questions, and I am still flush with omgyay).

Yesterday I got some purple dye, and this morning before work, I put it in my hair to see what it would do. Not a lot, as it turns out: my hair is too dark. Now it's even darker, with something of a blue cast to it. While kinda disappointing, it's not actually surprising, and it's definitely not a bad result.

Leaving for Grand Forks at stupid o'clock Saturday morning. Clothes are basically picked out, and toiletries are selected and quart-size bagged.

Memes

Still open for questions.

I know so little about you, I'm afraid my question is quite pedestrian! What would your dream job be?

Pretty close to what I'm doing right now. I want to be an archivist full-time, as my real grownup job. But I'm not thrilled with the idea of meetings and managing other people, which my bosses at work have to do. I just want to work with the collections.

Placeholder

I want to write about "lazy femme," which is what I call my gender presentation. In short: I like things like skirts and makeup, but I don't generally bother with these more effortful bits of gendered plumage.

( 11 links )

Plans

More packing, go to bed, sleep, get up, go to work, come home, eat dinner, finish packing, go to bed, get up, get on airplane, arrive in Grand Forks, get laid.

comments

I should be asleep by now.

Notes

I have come up with this little posting template (okay, I looked at shadesong's journal and mostly borrowed her format) to help myself post more regularly. We'll see how it works...

Recently

Tired; I stayed up too late chatting with C. And then after work today, I went to the Dating While Feminist event for three hours, which was very social and, as a result, kind of exhausting.

Oh, and the hem fell out of the bottom of my right trouser leg this morning; I fixed it with safety pins. Anyone in Boston know a good tailor? Convenient to Orange Line a plus, convenient to Northeastern a doubleplus. Some of my pants need fixing; pretty much all of them need shortening. *is too short for regular women's inseams but too tall for petites*

Yay for contacts! Although the left one is not feeling very happy. I am kind of wondering if I have it in backwards - but I can still see just fine! IDK whether having the lens inside out would actually affect vision correction, or just comfort.

Furthermore, my contacts claim they can be worn continuously for a week or daily for two weeks (taking them out to sleep); I think I'm going to have to go for the continuous end of things, because augh plucking lenses out of my eyes! Much much harder than sticking them in.

( Dreamwidth )

Links!

via rivenwanderer: Riot Nrrd Comics | riotnrrdcomics_feed

damned_colonial: Stretching a metaphor til it breaks
So I was just chatting on IM with epershand and I produced a whole theory about Perl and Python which I will now attempt to summarise for you.
