• The Pervocracy: Super Happy Fun Post: Symptom.

  Last night was my first night back at work. And man, it was like Domestic Violence Night up in that place. (Nights often have themes in emergency services; once I took six patients with broken hips in a row. Six right hips.) Every other bed had a sobbing, bruised girlfriend. For obvious reasons I can't go into detail, but it was pretty ugly what had happened to some of these women. It wasn't a hasty, thoughtless blow in the heat of an argument; it was deliberate torture.
  
  But ugly as the injuries can be, over time I've come to understand that they're just symptoms. The actual violence is a cough when the entire relationship has the Bubonic Fucking Plague.

  De Becker's book covers bomb threats and assassination attempts, but a lot of it is for women, and the bullshit ways "being nice" puts us at risk. It's why I feel entirely, happily justified in not saying a word to men who think they own my time. It's why I pretend not to hear middleaged guys on the bus who say, "Hey, you're pretty." It's why I refuse to let men I've only just met tell me what I should and shouldn't do.

  ... it occurred to me that I keep (and promote) a list of DW crafters/artisans, but not a list of writers, photographers, yadda with links to their work so that people can view and/or buy it.

  Ableism is discrimination against people with disabilities, including the expression of hate for people with disabilities, denial of accessibility, rejection of disabled applicants for housing and jobs, institutionalised discrimination in the form of benefits systems designed to keep people with disabilities in poverty, etc.

  I've come to the conclusion that the music industry don't actually want people like me to spend more money on music, which you'd think would be in their interests. No, they want the musical tastes of the public to be completely predictable and ideally entirely dictated by the companies that own the music. They want to make sure that nobody ever discovers a new artist except by listening to mainstream commercial radio, and nobody ever buys any music except from distributors which only really stock the same songs that show up on those highly controlled radio channels. Never mind the long tail, never mind the convenience of an entirely digital distribution chain, they want to know exactly which artists they should sign because consumers can spend money only on the artists that they have chosen to back. They're using mechanisms like DRM, like really disproportionate reaction to copyright infringement and "file sharing", like closing down music discovery services and removing fanvids from YouTube, not to protect copyright as they claim, but to make the music market predictable.
