My mother had gone to New Orleans for Mardi Gras the year before, along with her college roommate and the roommate's boyfriend.
They were in the French Quarter when a drunk guy walked up, told the boyfriend it wasn't fair that he had two women, and (my mother being 5'2" and less than 100 pounds) slung Mom over his shoulder and sauntered off.
So the next year, they had set Mom up with a date for every night, with various of the roommate's boyfriend's friends. But they went into New Orleans a day early, and the boyfriend wound up calling everyone he knew until he found someone who was in town and didn't have plans.
And then, about fifteen years later, I came along...
